Women's Basketball Season Ends With Loss To No. 6-Grand Valley State

Cherney and Sherwood each scored 13 points.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (18-10 overall) concluded its 2021-22 campaign with a 72-46 setback to sixth-ranked Grand Valley State University (28-2 overall) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
GVSU scored the first nine points of the game as the Warriors went scoreless in their first five possessions (four missed field goals and one turnover).

A triple by senior Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) put WSU on the board at the 7:03 mark, and helped Wayne State outscore the Lakers 14-11 the rest of the period.  Senior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) led all scorers in the opening stanza with nine points on 2-of-2 field goals, including a triple, plus 4-of-5 at the free throw line.  Grand Valley led 20-14 after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
The Warriors managed just two points in the first 5:20 of the quarter, a bucket by senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) as GVSU took a 27-16 lead at the media timeout.

WSU did outscore the Lakers 8-7 the rest of the first half, but trailed by 10 (34-24) at intermission.  Sherwood added another field goal, Cherney made two foul shots, as did George, while fifth-year senior Anna Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic) scored on a driving lay-up just before halftime.

Third Quarter
Grand Valley scored seven of the first 12 points, then extended its lead by out-scoring the Warriors 13-6 over the final 4:35 of the period for a 20-11 advantage in the stanza.  Sherwood led WSU with five points in the period.

Fourth Quarter
The Lakers began the final period with a 10-2 run as Wayne State did not make a field goal until the 3:30 mark.  Junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) connected twice from beyond the arc in a span of 90 seconds helping the Warriors to a 9-8 scoring edge over the final four minutes.

Wayne State shot 28 percent (13-of-46) from the field, compared to GVSU's 38 percent (23-of-61).  WSU made just 4-of-17 (24 percent) from three-point range, with the Lakes draining 46 percent (11-of-24) from beyond the arc.  The Warriors were 16-of-18 (89 percent) from the charity stripe, with Grand Valley making 15-of-18 (83 percent) foul shots.  WSU was out-rebounded 43-29, and had 16 turnovers to 10 miscues by GVSU.
