Softball Concludes Spring Break Trip With Two Losses

Warriors fall 2-1 to Saint Anselm, and 7-4 to Le Moyne.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (7-9 overall) concluded its 2022 spring break trip with 2-1 setback to Saint Anselm (6-7 overall) and a 7-4 loss to Le Moyne (8-8 overall).  After going 2-2 at the Lewis Dome Invitational, the Warriors went 5-7 in Florida.

GAME ONE RECAP
Kylie Fitzpatrick, the Hawks leadoff batter in the bottom of the first, sent a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field fence giving Saint Anselm an early 1-0 lead.

SAC extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single by Kate Irwin.  She stole second and scored on a single by Bailey Cain.

Wayne State tried to rally in the seventh as junior outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield).  A single by senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) put runners on the corners.  Kaple scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.), but a ground out ended the contest.

Le Moyne answered back with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on two hits, an RBI ground out and a wild pitch.

The Warriors pulled within 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth as junior outfielder Emily Guzzo (London, Ont.) had a leadoff single and advanced to second when junior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) reached on a fielding error.  After back-to-back fielder's choices, WSU had runners at the corners.  Psenicka singled to plate Hodder.

Wayne State scored again in the fifth as Ruczynski went all the way to second on a Le Moyne error.  With two outs, Guzzo and Hodder each had infield hits to load the bases.  Ruczynski scored the Warriors fourth run as Kaple reached on an error.
