Softball Drops Pair of Non-League Games At Findlay

Warriors fall 2-1 and 4-0.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball squad (7-11 overall) dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at the University of Findlay (17-9 overall) on Wednesday afternoon.  The host Oilers won the opener 2-1, and blanked the Warriors 4-0 in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
WSU grabbed a 1-0 lead just three batters into the contest.  Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff double, her team-leading fourth two-bagger of the season, and advanced to second on a ground out.  Psenicka scored on an infield single by freshman outfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).  A pair of two outs walks to junior outfielder Emily Guzzo (London, Ont.) and senior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) loaded the bases, but the next batter was retired on strikes.

UF answered in the bottom of the frameon back-to-back one-out singles, with the lead runner advancing to third on a fly out.  The Oilers worked a double steal to plate the tying run and Kyla Snow's RBI single would be the last of the scoring in the contest.

Wayne State had back-to-back two-out walks in the second, a one-out single by junior outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) in the fourth, plus a two-out walk to Psenicka followed by a single from sophomore shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) but left the bases loaded.

Wayne State stranded eight base runners including five in scoring position.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) struck out six and walked one while surrendering two earned runs on four hits.  She only allowed two base runners after the first inning - a one-out double in the third and a one-out walk in the fifth.

Megan Demler (6-3) limited Wayne State to one run on four hits.  She struck out four and walked five.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.  Miller reached twice via a single and a walk.

LEADING THE OILERS
Bailey Bates and Demler each went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

GAME 2 RECAP
WSU threatened in the top of the first on a single by Psenicka with Miller reaching on a throwing error, but three straight outs ended the frame.

Junior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) reached first on a hit by pitch to start the second, and Psenicka led off the third with a single but neither runner could reach third.

The Oilers scored once in the bottom of the first on a leadoff home run by Avery Shepherd.  UF extended its lead in the second on a leadoff double by Olivia Carlton and a one-out RBI single by Emma Bode.

Findlay completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the fifth on a single, two walks and a two-run double by Caroline Turner.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) allowed four earned runs on six hits in six innings.  She struck out four and walked five.

Emma Jones (3-0) hurled the shutout limiting WSU to two singles.  She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka had both of WSU's hits.

LEADING THE OILERS
Shepherd went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
