Baseball Improves to 30-13 with Saturday Sweep

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (30-13, 15-6 GLIAC) took both games from Purdue Northwest (17-17, 6-13 GLIAC) on Saturday.  WSU won each games by scores of 9-2.  It is the seventh time the Green & Gold have won 30 or more games under head coach Ryan Kelley.

GAME ONE (W, 9-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning on six hits.  Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) drove in the game's first run with an RBI single into right field.  Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) made it 3-0 with a two-run single.  A wild pitch later in the frame allowed MacLean to score and Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) drove in two more runs with a single into left field.

Purdue Northwest scored twice with two hits and two walks in the top of the sixth inning.

WSU answered with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) drove in a run with a single and MacLean doubled to left field to bring home two more runs to give the Warriors a 9-2 lead.

AT THE PLATE
MacLean drove in four runs with two hits.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Tanderys finished 2-for-4.

ON THE MOUND
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) (6-1) went all seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out five.

GAME TWO (W, 9-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams were quiet until Wayne State used two hits, including a home run from DeLanoy, to score twice in the bottom of the third inning.  An RBI single from MacLean accounted for the inning's other tally.

Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) connected for a three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning, extending the home advantage to 5-0.

A Miller double and a DeLanoy triple started the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 6-0.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) and MacLean added RBI to stretch the WSU lead to 8-0.

The Pride used three hits in the top of the eighth inning to score twice.

DeLanoy came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning needing a double for the cycle btu settled for a well-struck single into center field.  Maury drove WSU's ninth run of the game with a single through the right side.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scores.  Tobel had three hits with three RBI, while Miller went 2-for-3.

ON THE MOUND
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich.) (3-2) was very sharp in seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out five without issuing a walk.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) and Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) both worked scoreless innings out of the bullpen to seal the win.


UP NEXT

Wayne State and Purdue Northwest will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.  The nine-member senior class will be honored prior to first pitch.
