Softball Splits Home Twinbill With Davenport

Warriors rebound after 6-2 setback to win the nightcap, 9-6.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (11-13 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) split a home conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against visiting Davenport University (12-14 overall, 4-4 GLIAC).  DU won the opener 6-2, but the Warriors rebounded for a 9-6 triumph in game two.

GAME ONE RECAP
The visiting Panthers scored once in the top of the first on two hits, a WSU throwing error and a sacrifice fly by Rachel Griffin.

DU extended its lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a leadoff triple by Monica Meger and a sacrifice fly by Gabby Palazzolo.

Davenport increased its advantage to 3-0 in the sixth as the first batter went to second on a Warrior throwing error, and scored on a two-out single by Lindsay Goodman.

The Panthers went up 6-0 in the top of the seventh on a three-run home run by Griffin following back-to-back singles by Palazzolo and Riley Hasseld.

Wayne State did score twice in the bottom of the seventh as senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) tripled to center field and scored on a double to left center by junior outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio).  A dribbler down the first base line by freshman infielder Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) turned out to be an RBI single.

WSU had chances early in the game leaving the bases loaded in the first, and getting two runners on in the fifth on hits by Psenicka and freshman outfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).  The Warriors stranded nine in the contest and went 5-for-18 with runners on, but two of those hits came in the bottom of the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits in seven innings.  She struck out five and walked one.

Emma Miller (7-6) went the distance for DU.  She limited Wayne State to two earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings.  Miller struck out two and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka and Ruczynski each had three hits, while senior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had two hits.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Griffin had two hits and four RBI, while Palazzolo and Riley Hasseld each contributed two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
For the second straight contest, Wayne State pounded out 11 hits, but went 8-for-17 with runners on base in this contest scoring eight times in the fifth and sixth innings combined turning a 3-1 deficit into a 9-3 lead.  DU tallied three runs in the top of the seventh to make it interesting.

Junior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (London, Ont.), in just her second game since being hit by a pitch on March 18, led off the bottom of the third with a double to right center.  Junior catcher Becky Hodder 's (Orangeville, Ont.) sacrifice bunt advanced Paolatto to third, where she scored on a sacrifice fly by Psenicka.

Davenport answered in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Rylie Kalina.

The Panthers snapped the 1-1 deadlock in the fifth as a one-out deep fly ball resulted in a triple by Palazzolo, who scored on a wild pitch, and an RBI double by Griffin, which plated Hasseld who had walked.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Warriors scored a season-high five runs in one inning.  Myers worked a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single through the left side by Paolatto.  Hodder then tripled down the right field line to knot the game at 3-3.  Psenicka had an RBI single down the first base line to put WSU in front 4-3.  Ruczynski singled off the first base bag on ball that had a lot of "English" on it.  A ground out, put two runners in scoring position with Wrubel's infield single making it 5-3.  Pinch-hitter Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) delivered an RBI single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wayne State added three runs which proved to be very important.  Paolatto had a leadoff single, and moved to third as Hodder reached on a throwing error.  Psenicka delivered an RBI single, and Kaple followed with a sacrifice bunt RBI.  Following a fly out, pitcher Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) plated WSU's ninth run with an RBI single through the left side.

In the top of the seventh, the first two DU batters were retired before a walk, a single and a two-run double by Griffin.  An RBI single by Koza preceded a pop out to end the contest.
