Softball Splits Home Doubleheader With No. 24-GVSU

Warriors won the opener 1-0, fell 13-11 in game two.

DETROIT -- In two polar opposite games, the Wayne State University softball squad (12-14 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) split a league doubleheader on Sunday vs. 24th-ranked Grand Valley State University (26-5 overall, 11-3 GLIAC) at Gary L. Bryce Field.  WSU won the opener 1-0 in 10 innings, then fell 13-11 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Warrior hurler Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) and GVSU ace Hannah Beatus battled for nine scoreless innings in the first game on Sunday.

The visiting Lakers left 11 runners on base through the first nine innings as Bonk scattered six singles and four walks along with two Wayne State miscues.

Meanwhile, Beatus limited WSU to seven hits, while recording 12 strikeouts to zero walks.

WSU had the first two runners in the bottom of thd first reach on a fielding error and a hit by pitch, but Beatus struck out the next three batters swinging.

Grand Valley State had back-to-back walks in the top of the second followed by a sacrifice bunt, but Bonk did her best Houdini act getting a fly out and a struck out to keep the game scoreless.

The Warriors had consecutive one-out singles in the second by Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) and Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) but a strikeout and a line out ended that threat.

The Lakers had two runners on in the fifth but a line out to second ended that frame.

Myers had a one-out single in the seventh and tried to go first to third on a single by Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) but a strong throw from right field ended the inning.

GVSU had back-to-back two-out singles in the eighth, but a foul out kept the game scoreless.

Bonk had a two-out double in the eighth advancing Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio), who had singled, to third but another foul out extended the game to the ninth inning.

Grand Valley State had runners at first and second with one out in the top of the ninth, but a line out double play ended the inning.

In the top of the 10th with the international tiebreaker rule being invoked, GVSU had an infield pop out, a ground out and a pop out to go 1-2-3.

Favela had a sacrifice bunt to move the placed runner (Hodder) to third.  After a strikeout, Hodder scored on a wild pitch, the 292nd pitch of the game.

HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR
The 24 runs scored by the two teams is only tied-for-eighth in WSU history.  The highest-scoring game was a 15-14 Warrior victory at Tiffin on April 7, 2012, followed by a 21-7 WSU triumph vs. LSSU in the 1992 GLIAC Tournament in Allendale, Mich.

Wayne State lost a 14-13 decision to Ohio Dominican on April 1, 2012, in Detroit, marking the most runs scored by WSU in a setback.

The magic number of 26 has occurred three times:
  • 15-11 loss at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on April 1, 1989;
  • 16-10 setback to Alabama-Huntsville in Decatur, Ala. on Feb. 21, 2009; and
  • 22-4 win over Ohio Dominican on March 31, 2012
The lone 25-run affair was a 24-1 Wayne State victory over St. Joseph's on April 25, 1998, in the GLIAC-GLVC Crossover in Joilet, Ill.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play four GLIAC Doubleheaders this coming week starting with a Tuesday twinbill at home vs. Saginaw Valley State.  First pitch of game one is slated for 3:30 p.m.
