Baseball Starts Postseason with 10-4 Win

GARY, Ind. --  The second-seeded Wayne State University baseball program (34-15) won 10-4 over No. 5 seed Saginaw Valley State (21-27) on Thursday to start the GLIAC Tournament.  WSU was held without a hit until the fifth inning but scored four runs in back-to-back innings to win the playoff opener.  The event is being played at the U.S. Steel Yard, home of the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals scored first in the top of the first with a run on three hits.  SVSU had runners at first and third with two outs in the top of the fourth inning but WSU was able to escape without any damage.

WSU finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs on three hits.  After a walk to Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.), a two-run home run to left field from Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) gave the Warriors a 2-1 advantage.  The blast was the first hit of the game for the Green & Gold.  Following two more walks and a wild pitch, Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) made it 4-1 with a two-run single into center field.

Five hits, including four extra base hits, in the bottom of the fifth inning produced four runs and extended WSU's lead to 8-1.  Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) started the scoring with an RBI double, before Finkbeiner singled home a run during the next at-bat.  Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) plated another run with a triple into left center and an RBI double from Jacob Badalamenti (Harrison Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) accounted for the eighth run of the game.

SVSU used an error and a double to trim its deficit to 8-2 in the top of the seventh inning.

Wayne State got that run right back in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Finkbeiner, scoring Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.).  A SVSU fielding error allowed WSU to add its 10th run of the contest.

Three hits allowed the Cards to score a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning.

AT THE PLATE
Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), Ramirez and Finkbeiner all had two hits, while Dale, Finkbeiner and DeLanoy collected two RBI each.

ON THE MOUND
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (8-1) allowed a run in five and 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) was effective in his two and a 1/3 innings of work, allowing a run and striking out four batters.  Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) was touched for two runs in a 1/3 of an inning before Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) collected the final two uts of the game without incident.

UP NEXT
WSU will meet the winner of Northwood and Grand Valley State on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.  The Warriors are looking to bolster its postseason resume and possibly host a Midwest Regional next weekend at Harwell Field.  Wayne State was second in the latest set of regional rankings.
