SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball team (13-34 overall) had its 2022 campaign come to an end with a 1-0 setback in eight innings to Saginaw Valley State University (32-18 overall) Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament at Sports Force Park.
The Warriors and Cardinals battled through seven innings with neither team able to plate a run.
WSU had six hits to SVSU's three until the bottom of the eighth.
Sydney Herioux worked a seven pitch leadoff walk, but Wayne State senior hurler
Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) buckled down striking out the next batter before inducing a pop out. On a 3-1 offering, Jackie Popko laced a double that bounced off the left field fence and caromed towards the infield allowing Herioux to score the game's only run.
It was WSU's 11th one-run loss of the season.
IN THE CIRCLE
Ameel (5-17) allowed just one earned run in 7.2 innings. She struck out three and walked two.
Julia Mundy started for SVSU and pitched 6.1 scoreless innings. She struck out three and walked one. Emily Depew (13-9) earned the win in relief recording three strikeouts and two ground outs in the five batters she faced.

Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) and
Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) each had two hits for WSU.

Herioux reached base twice with a double and a walk, while scoring the game's lone run.
