Fitzpatrick and Spicer Receive GLIAC Commissioner's Awards

DETROIT -- Two Wayne State University student-athletes were selected as GLIAC Commissioner's Award honorees for the 2022 spring sports season.  Junior baseball pitcher Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) and junior men's tennis standout Dom Spicer (London, England) become the 67th and 68th WSU student-athletes so recognized in the 15-year history of the award.

The awards are bestowed after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes of junior, senior or graduate student status that excel both in the classroom and in competition.

Fitzpatrick was voted to the All-Region Second Team by the D2CCA, the NCBWA and the ABCA after a fantastic junior season for the Green & Gold. In addition, he was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team and earned CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District honors.  The Monroe, Mich., native was also named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team.  Fitzpatrick was selected GLIAC Pitcher of the Week on four occasions this past season.  He led the GLIAC in wins (9) and ranked fifth in innings pitched (71.1), sixth in ERA (2.65), and ninth in strikeouts (56).  Fitzpatrick went 9-1 with a 2.65 ERA in 12 starts and struck out 56 batters in 71 and 1/3 innings.  He collected one complete game, while being a part of two combined shutouts and the opposition hit .255 against the right-hander.  Academically, Fitzpatrick has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all six semesters at WSU.

Spicer was the No. 1 singles player on the Warrior squad which advanced to the national championship match.  He was voted GLIAC Player of the Year as well as First Team All-GLIAC.  Spicer was the recipient of the 2022 ITA Midwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.  He compiled a 24-11 singles record, including wins over No. 1 ranked Alvaro Regalado of Columbus State in the national semifinals, and No. 2 Juan Ortiz Couder (Embry-Riddle) during spring break.  A three-time GLIAC Player of the Week in 2022, Spicer was ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the Midwest Region by the ITA, along with a No. 26 national ranking.  In addition, he paired with Luke Laws to earn the No. 9 doubles ranking in the final ITA Midwest Regional rankings, along with a No. 35 national ranking.  Academically, he has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) three times, including the Winter 2022 semester, while also being named to the Coach's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.0-3.49) the other three semesters.

Fitzpatrick's selection marks the 11th for the WSU baseball program as he joins Hunter Brown, Andrew Ciennik, Brady Cooper, Matt Cunningham, Griffin Harms, Ryan Mergener, Ethan Vasiliauskas, Michael Wiseman (twice), and Brett Witczak.

Spicer's selection marks the fourth for the WSU men's tennis program as he joins Thomas Ducret (twice) and Niklas Karcz.

The 68 honorees for WSU is the third-most in the conference during the 15-year history of the program.
