Feature Story: Intramural & Club Sports Return

The following feature first appeared in the football game program on Sept. 17, 2022.

Wayne State is bringing back their full slate of intramural sports since the world got shut down in March 2020.

As students begin the semester and stumble into their 8:00 am classes, extracurricular activities can be a good stress reliever.  Whether you have played sports in the past or not, intramurals are the perfect way to build community on campus and practice some friendly competition.  For those who want to compete with classmates and compete against students from other universities club sports are right up your alley.

The stress and anxiety that comes with syllabi, due dates, exams and having to skip that morning coffee because that snooze button was just too appealing, can really get to you.  Well, maybe not the coffee part, an afternoon coffee is always acceptable.

Regardless, unwinding in the evening with 3-on-3 basketball or a flag football game can help you forget about all the stressors you can expect on your way to getting your degree.

To sign up for intramural sports, simply visit the Campus Recreation/Intramural/Club Sports tab on the athletics website and sign up for IMLeagues.  IMLeagues is an online portal for registration, scheduling and messaging your team.

Now, club sports are slightly different.  They are groups created by students for those who have similar interests and want to compete locally, regionally and nationally.

Like any other club on campus, all that is needed to start one is a group of like-minded, ambitious students.

This year the men's and women's club soccer teams joined the MASC and W-MASC respectively.  This conference is a step up from past years and competes against universities all around the state including the University of Michigan, Michigan State, Grand Valley State, Ferris State, and many more.  Also new this year, the club water polo and swimming teams have been added to the list of club teams available to join.

At the end of the day, the goal of intramurals and club sports is to provide distraction from the busy schedules that can get demanding from time to time.

If you're looking to sign up for any of the variety of opportunities provided by Campus Recreation check out their page at rfc.wayne.edu/intramural
