GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (8-7 overall, 1-6 GLIAC) fell 75-65 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Davenport University (7-10 overall, 1-6 GLIAC) as the Warriors were out-scored 14-4 in the extra session.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Sophomore forward
Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) tallied seven of WSU's first 10 points to get the Warriors started strong. Wayne State led 21-16 after 10 minutes as WSU made 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Senior guard
Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) contributed six points in the stanza.
Second Quarter
The host Panthers began the second period on a 10-8 run to pull within three at the media timeout. Each team scored eight points over the final four minutes giving the Warriors a 37-34 advantage at intermission. Fugate connected on two triples in scoring a quarter-best six points.
Third Quarter
Only 10 points were scored in the first 5:15 of the period with Davenport cutting its deficit to one (41-40). DU out-scored Wayne State 10-8 over the final 4:20 of the stanza to lead 50-49 after 30 minutes. Senior guard
Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) and Fugate each had three points in the period as WSU was out-scored 16-12 in the stanza.
Fourth Quarter
Wayne State had an 8-7 scoring advantage in the first six minutes of the quarter to even the score at 57-57. The Panthers' Lillee Gustafson scored twice in 45 seconds giving the hosts a 61-57 advantage. A bucket by Tripp with 1:51 left along with a game-tying hoop by senior
Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) with 39.8 seconds remaining sent the game into overtime.
Overtime
Davenport scored the first nine points of the extra session to grab a 70-61 advantage. The Panthers made 7-of-10 from the foul line over the final 75 seconds to secure the win.
TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 33 percent (24-of-73) from the floor, while DU connected on 24-of-60 (40 percent). WSU was 6-of-24 (25 percent) from beyond the arc, with the Panthers making 10-of-24 (42 percent) from three-point range. The Warriors were 11-of-14 (79 percent) from the foul line with Davenport shooting 57 percent (17-of-30) from the charity stripe. DU had a 49-42 edge in rebounding.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fugate tallied a team-high 15 points, while Tripp contributed 13 points.Â
Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) chipped in with 12 points. Moore grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, while Fugate dished out a team-high four assists.
LEADING THE PANTHERS
Mary Liedel (17 points and 11 rebounds) and Gustafson (15 points and 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles. Scout Nelson was credited with 12 points, six rebounds and a team-best four assists.
