Men's Basketball Defeated 69-60 By Visiting Lake Superior State

Marshall and Lewis combine for 35 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (7-8 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) suffered a 69-60 home court setback to visiting Lake Superior State University (7-9 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) Thursday evening at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Warriors jumped out to an early 7-2 lead on two lay-ups by senior guard Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and a triple by freshman guard Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher).  WSU led 10-6 following another long-range shot by Harris, but the Lakers tallied the next five points for a 11-10 advantage.

After falling behind 15-13, Wayne State scored the next eight points on a triple by senior Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance), a fast-break lay-up by junior guard Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman H.S.), a jumper by Harris and a free throw by senior center Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.).  The Warriors had a 28-22 lead following a bucket by Talbot, but Lake Superior State rattled off 14 straight points until a conventional three-point play by senior forward Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) ended the scoreless drought of over 5:30 by WSU.

LSSU led 38-33 at intermission as forward Kemon Bassett had 13 points.

Second Half
A Marshall turnaround jumper at the 18:18 mark was the first points after halftime by either team and pulled Wayne State within three (38-35).  A triple by Marshall at the 14:15 mark knotted the score at 45-45, and a Marshall hoop moments later gave the Warriors a lead at 47-45.

A 9-0 run by Lake Superior gave the visitors a 54-47 advantage.  Following a step-back triple by Marshall, the Lakers out-scored the Warriors 9-3 for a 63-53 lead with 5:07 remaining.  WSU would not get closer than seven the rest of the way.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field, compared to LSSU's 49 percent (27-of-55).  WSU connected 8-of-19 triple tries (42 percent) with the Lakers making 5-of-10 (50 percent) from three-point range.  The Warriors were just 6-of-13 (46 percent) from the charity stripe with Lake Superior not much better at 59 percent (10-of-17).  The Lakers had a 42-32 edge in rebounding, along with a 38-24 edge in points in the paint.
