Slow Start Leads to 61-48 Setback for Men's Basketball

Lennox and Gordon combine for 26 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (7-10 overall, 4-6 GLIAC) suffered its third consecutive loss falling 61-48 to visiting Saginaw Valley State University (11-9 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Cardinals scored the first 10 points of the game as WSU went scoreless for over 5:40 to start the contest.  A jumper by senior guard Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) ended the drought.  Senior center Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) had an offensive rebound and put-back 30 seconds later, before a turnaround jumper by freshman guard Justice Gordon (Brampton, Ont.) concluded the 6-0 spurt by the Warriors.

SVSU responded with a 12-2 run for a 14-point margin (22-8) with just over eight minutes remaining before intermission.  The teams were pretty even the next four minutes as Saginaw Valley State had a 7-6 scoring advantage for a 29-14 lead at the final media timeout.  Wayne State scored 10 of the final 18 points prior to halftime.  Gordon connected twice from long range, while junior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) also drained a triple.

Cardinal Chansey Willis Jr. led all scorers with 11 points after 20 minutes, while Gordon had nine points and four rebounds for the Warriors.

Second Half
A steal and fast-break lay-up by junior guard Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman H.S.) just under three minutes into the second half cut the WSU deficit to nine (37-28), but Saginaw Valley State answered with five consecutive points for a 42-28 lead.  Four straight points by Marshall in a span of 20 seconds made it a 10-point game at 42-32 with just under 13 minutes remaining, but the Warriors would not get closer than 11 the rest of the way.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 30 percent (17-of-56) from the floor, and just 28 percent (8-of-29) from beyond the arc.  Meanwhile, SVSU connected on 44 percent (23-of-52) of its field goal attempts, including 6-of-15 (40 percent) from long range.  WSU was 6-of-10 (60 percent) from the charity stripe, with the Cardinals making nine of 13 foul shot attempts (69 percent).  Saginaw Valley State had a 39-32 edge in rebounding, along with a 30-14 advantage in points in the paint.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Lennox had a team-high 15 points and three assists, while Gordon scored a career-high 11 points (he had nine career points prior to today's contest).  Williams, Jr grabbed a team-best six boards.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Willis led three Saginaw Valley players in double figures with a game-high 18 points, along with a game-best four assists.  Freddie McIntosh contributed 12 points and six defensive rebounds, while Tre Garrett chipped in with 11 points, five steals and five offensive rebounds.
