DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (10-8 overall, 3-7 GLIAC) concluded their three-game homestand by falling to visiting Saginaw Valley State (11-9 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) 69-56 on Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors got off to a strong start, with senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) scoring the game's first five points on a made triple and a fast break lay-up. The Cardinals would proceed to score 23 points in a quarter that saw 42 points tallied between the two squads. Saginaw Valley's Kaitlyn Zarycki was the main catalyst for SVSU, generating eight consecutive points for her club late in the frame. Zarycki and Fugate each notched 10 points in the opening stanza, totaling 20 of those 43 points on the scoreboard.

Second Quarter
SVSU out-scored WSU 9-2 by the media timeout to increase their command to 32-21. Wayne State would keep the deficit to no more than nine thanks to a pair of made shots by redshirt senior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) and a three-pointer from sophomore Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern). The Cardinals led at the halftime break by a score of 37-29. Saginaw Valley State shot an even 50 percent in the opening half (13-of-26), while Wayne State shot 10-of-31 (32 percent).

Third Quarter
Wayne State trailed by 11 after the first made basket, a three-pointer from Tyler Scheid. WSU worked hard to cut into the Cardinal lead, and made some progress by the end of the quarter. Fugate and sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) each drilled triples from beyond the arc, and the Warriors trailed by only five with 10 minutes to play. WSU out-scored SVSU in the stanza by a 17-14 margin, the only time all game they out-scored the visitors in a quarter. Fugate and Tripp combined for 10 of the 17 points.

Fourth Quarter
Moore was good on a jumper to make the score 53-48 with eight minutes remaining. In the end, the five point deficit would be the closest the Warriors would draw to the Cardinals, as Saginaw Valley went on a 16-8 run to finish out the final minutes. WSU was simply unable to contain Zarycki, who once again scored eight points in a row for her team following the Moore basket. Wayne State scored their final basket on a field goal from Shagena with 44 seconds to play.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 20-of-57 (35 percent) from the floor for the game, while Saginaw Valley State shot 55 percent (24-of-44). The teams were rather even from beyond the arc, with the Warriors having a 36 percent mark from three (8-of-22) and the Cardinals a 38 percent mark (6-of-16). From the free throw line, WSU went 8-of-9 (89 percent) compared to SVSU's 15-of-20 (75 percent). Saginaw Valley State nearly doubled Wayne State in points in the paint with a 34-18 edge.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fugate scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Moore and freshman Hillary Griffin (Jackson, Mich. / Parma Western) came close to reaching double-figures as both notched nine points. Tripp had three steals to lead the squad. Sophomore Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) finished with a +5 for the contest.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Zarycki scored 30 points in the contest on 10-of-14 shooting, by far leading both clubs. She also was a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe. DePerry (11 points) and Scheid (11 points) also reached double digits.
