Football Upended By #16-Davenport

DETROIT -- On a rainy night in Motown, the Wayne State University football team (2-5 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) had five turnovers and allowed a safety in falling 32-3 to No. 16-ranked Davenport University (6-0 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) at Tom Adams Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Through the first three drives of the contest, the game was scoreless as WSU had one punt and a blocked field goal, while the visiting Panthers failed to convert on a fourth-and-four.

On DU's second possession, the guests went 79 yards in four plays with Myren Harris scoring on a 53-yard rush up the middle.

Warrior signal caller Eli McLean (Clarkston, Mich. / Notre Dame Prep) was intercepted near midfield on the next WSU drive.  Davenport extended its lead to 10-0 on a 23-yard field goal by Brandon Gielow on the second play of the second period.

Second Quarter
Following a Wayne State punt, the Panthers added to their margin with a five-play, 70-yard touchdown drive concluding with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jason Whittaker to Peyton Brown.

The Warriors answered with an eight-play, 38-yard drive culminating in a 48-yard field goal by junior Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.).

Neither team was able to score on each of its next three possessions.

DU's Gielow connected on a 36-yard field goal on the final play of the opening half for a 20-3 score after 30 minutes.

Davenport held a 244 to 97 edge in total offense through the first two quarters.

Third Quarter
The Panthers took the second half kickoff and drove 71 yards in eight plays to make it 27-3.  Whittaker tossed a 17-yard scoring strike to Preston Smith.

The WSU offense garnered one first down, but a fourth down snap sailed over the Wayne State punter and through the end zone giving the visitors a 29-3 lead with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter.

Two Davenport punts were sandwiched around a Warrior interception.

Fourth Quarter
After another WSU field goal was blocked, the Wayne State defense forced another punt,

On the first play after the punt, the Warriors threw their fifth interception of the game.

DU took advantage of the short field with a 27-yard field goal by Gielow to complete the scoring.

TEAM STATS
Davenport had a 437-134 edge in total offense as the bad snap on the punt cost WSU 34 yards.  The Panthers led in rushing yards 274 to 47 and 35 minutes to 25 minutes in terms of time of possession.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Kendall Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) rushed for a team-high 75 yards.  McLean completed 5-of-15 passes for 22 with three interceptions.  Josh Kulka (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley), in his season debut, passed for 65 yards on 1-of-6 with two interceptions.  Each signal caller was sacked three times.  Junior Te'Avion Warren (Flint, Mich. / Davison) recorded a game-high 63 receiving yards.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Harris rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown, while Whittaker was 16-of-31 for 163 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.  Brenden Sherrod notched a game-best five catches for a team-leading 55 yards.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play three of its final four games on the road starting with a 2 p.m. contest on October 21st at Saginaw Valley State.
