Men's Hoops Falls 71-65 In Season Opener At Home To Hillsdale

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (0-1 overall) was unable to maintain its halftime advantage as the Hillsdale College Chargers (1-0 overall) defeated the Warriors 71-65 Friday evening at the WSU Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
HC scored the first four points of the contest and led 10-4 just 2:50 into the game.  Three consecutive WSU buckets by sophomore Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher), sophomore Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and junior Colin Golson, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Ferndale) evened the match at 10-10.

A hook shot by newcomer Kareem Aburashed (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) tied the game at 12-12 and started another 6-0 run by Wayne State.  A steal and lay-up by senior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman H.S.) and another basket by Golson gave the hosts a 16-12 advantage.

The Warriors led by eight (22-14), their largest maring of the game, after two foul shots by senior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) and a lay-up by Coffey.  WSU had a 27-22 lead after a jumper by Harris with 3:30 remaining before intermission.  Hillsdale ended the opening 20 minutes on an 8-6 run to trail the hosts 33-30 at halftime.

Wayne State led for nearly 14 minutes (13:41) of the first half.

Second Half
WSU led 38-34 just 1:40 into the second half on a triple by Harris, Wayne State's first long range make of the night.  A driving lay-up by newcomer Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) ended a 6-0 spurt by the Chargers and tied the contest at 40-40 with just over 16 minutes remaining.

Hillsdale went on a 10-0 run as the Warriors were scoreless for nearly five minutes until a Golson jumper at 11:14 cut the deficit to eight (50-42).  A Harris' jumper made the margin six (50-44).

A lay-up by Williams and an offensive rebound and put-back by Adley made it a two-point game (56-54) with 5:20 left.  However, HC scored eight of the next 10 points to lead 64-56 with 90 seconds remaining.  

Wayne State would only get as close as five points (69-64) following a basket by freshman Jordan Briggs (Muskegon, Mich.) with 10 seconds left.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 49 percent (28-of-57) from the field, while Hillsdale was exactly the same at 28-of-57 (49 percent).  WSU was just 1-of-12 from three-point range (8 percent), with HC connecting on 4 of its 17 triple tries (24 percent).  The Warriors made eight of their 11 foul shots (73 percent) compared to the Chargers 11-of-15 (73 percent).  Hillsdale had a 35-29 edge in rebounding as the teams combined for just 15 turnovers (8 for Hillsdale and 7 for Wayne State).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Both Golson and Harris tallied 11 points, while Coffey added 10 points.  Williams contributed six points and a team-best six rebounds.

LEADING THE CHARGERS
Charles Woodhams recorded a game-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting.  Joe Reuter added 16 points, with CJ Yarian grabbing a game-best 15 rebounds and dishing out a game-high eight helpers.

Wayne State will travel to Malone for a 3 p.m. contest on Sunday (Nov. 12th) to conclude the GLIAC/G-MAC Crossover weekend.
