Women's Basketball Pulls Away from Lawrence Tech to Earn 80-52 Victory

Leister, Fugate, and Tripp all scored in double-figures for the contest.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (4-1 overall) outpaced visiting Lawrence Tech University (2-3 overall) by 20 in the second half to pull away from the Blue Devils and notch an 80-52 triumph on Sunday afternoon at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Neither team scored for over three minutes to begin the contest, until a jumper from Addie Nagel put the Blue Devils on the board first with 6:39 remaining.  Junior forward Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) sank a free throw to give Wayne State its first point with 5:40 left in the opening stanza.  Shagena was making her first career start in her 43rd game as a Warrior.  Sophomore forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) converted on a layup with five minutes remaining in the quarter to give the Green and Gold its first lead.  The Warriors would never trail again and scored 17 points in the final half of the first to hold a 17-11 advantage after 10 minutes.  10 of WSU's 17 points in the first came courtesy of junior forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center).

Second Quarter
The Warriors notched their first double-digit lead (21-11) of the contest following a layup from junior guard Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) at just over two minutes into the new stanza.  Lawrence Tech would keep the score within 10 for the rest of the quarter, and trailed by as few as four twice (30-26 and 32-28) after a triple and jumper by Kate Jacobs with under three minutes left.  WSU would double up LTU 8-4 in the closing minutes following Jacobs' three-pointer to head into intermission with an eight-point edge (38-30), despite not making any of its nine three-point tries in the opening 20 minutes.

Third Quarter
The Green and Gold pulled away from the Blue Devils for good by outpacing the visitors 22-9 in the third quarter.  LTU made two of its 14 attempts from the floor (14 percent) in the period, as the Wayne State defense swarmed the guests.  By the third quarter media timeout with 4:45 remaining, the Warriors held a 14-point lead (44-30).  The squad went on a 16-9 run from the media break to the end of the stanza.  WSU hit 60 points in the final seconds on a Tripp three-pointer.

Redshirt senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) nailed a triple and grabbed a rebound in the span of 28 seconds (2:26 to 1:58) to reach 10 points and 10 rebounds for the fifth double-double of her career.

Fourth Quarter
The final 10 minutes saw the Warriors outscore Lawrence Tech by seven (20-13) to finish a 28-point triumph.  LTU did not score in the first 3:40 until a free throw from Dominique Evans broke the scoreless drought of nearly four minutes.  WSU reached 70 via a layup from senior forward ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford (Pensacola State / Cleveland State)) and earned 80 for the second straight contest on a three-pointer from freshman guard Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) in the game's final minute.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, knocking down 32-of-65 attempts (49 percent), while Lawrence Tech went 14-of-49 (29 percent) from the field.  LTU outpaced WSU in both three-point and free throw percentage, however, as the Blue Devils drained five of their 14 triples (36 percent) and 19 of their 23 free throws (83 percent).  The Warriors shot 5-of-21 from beyond the arc (24 percent) and sank 11-of-17 attempts at the charity stripe (65 percent).  Wayne State won the rebounding battle by more than double (50-23), while also being credited for 17 offensive rebounds to Lawrence Tech's five.  WSU had more assists (23-9), steals (10-6), and points in the paint (54-14).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp led the team with 15 points, while grabbing eight rebounds.  Fugate's 10 points in her double-double performance also saw her reach double-figures.  Leister's 10 on 5-of-10 shooting made it a trio of Warriors with 10 or more points for the game.  Redshirt senior guard Kate McArthur Warren, Mich. / Cousino (Central Michigan)) registered five assists and five steals, both of which were game-highs.

LEADING THE BLUE DEVILS
Jacobs led all scorers with a game-best 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting (5-of-5 FT).  Gracie Bobo collected nine points on a trio of three-pointers for a game-best from beyond the arc.  Evans recorded five rebounds and two steals.
