Women's Basketball Leads Wire-To-Wire In 61-42 Triumph At Michigan Tech

Tripp and Fuguate combine for 40 points.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (7-2 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) rebounded from Thursday's setback with an impressive 61-42 triumph at Michigan Tech University (5-4 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The visiting Warriors started just the opposite of Thursday night (Northern Michigan scored the first nine points two days) by tallying the first 13 points this afternoon and holding the Huskies scoreless for the first 5:25 of the contest.  Four different players scored led by junior Shea Tripp's (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) five points, back-to-back triples by seniors Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) and Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) followed by a lay-up from sophomore Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.).

WSU led 18-4 after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
MTU's Sara Dax drained a three pointer on the opening possession of the stanza, and Lydia Schaible added a bucket two minutes later to cut the Wayne State's advantage to nine (18-9).  Lutchka responded with a triple off a feed from junior Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma).

After a Tripp field goal extended the lead to 12 (23-11), the Huskies countered with four consecutive points on baskets by Katleyn Meister and Isabella Lenz to make it an eight-point contest (23-15) with just under 5:30 remaining before intermission.

Freshman McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) connected from beyond the arc off a feed from Tripp to restore the double-digit margin (26-15).  Ferguson made both foul shots 30 seconds later for a 28-15 lead, then a jumper by Tripp had the Warriors doubling up the Huskies at 30-15 with just over three minutes left before halftime.

Six straight points by MTU on a conventional three-point play by Meister and a triple by Lenz preceded a lay-up by Tripp to conclude the first half scoring.  Wayne State led 32-21 after 20 minutes.

Third Quarter
Tripp began the second half with a triple pushing the lead to 14 (35-21).  A long-range jumper by Fugate extended the margin to 17 (42-25) with just under six minutes left in the stanza.  Five consecutive points by Tripp gave the visitors a 47-27 lead, before Dax's lay-up in the final minute cut Wayne State's lead to 18 (47-29) heading into the final period.

Fourth Quarter
A lay-up by Tripp started the fourth quarter scoring and helped WSU re-gain a 20-point edge at 49-29.   A 7-2 run by Michigan Tech trimmed the visitors lead to 15 (51-36).  Fugate drained a triple just before the mid-point of the period pushing the lead to 18 (54-36).  Over the final five minutes of the contest, WSU held a 7-6 scoring edge for the 61-42 road victory.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 41 percent (21-of-51) from the floor compared to MTU's 31 percent (16-of-51).  WSU made 9-of-25 (36 percent) triple tries, while the Huskies were 5-of-22 (23 percent).  The Warriors made 10-of-12 (83 percent) from the charity stripe, with Michigan Tech connecting on 5-of-6 (83 percent) of its foul shots.  Wayne State grabbed 36 rebounds and garnered 12 steals, while MTU had 29 rebounds and 17 turnovers.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp tallied a game-high 26 points (her second consecutive 26-point outing) and a game-best 11 rebounds for WSU's second double-double of the season.  Fugate chipped in with 14 points and seven boards.  Lutchka nearly had a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

LEADING THE HUSKIES

WSU NOTES

The back-to-back 20+-outings by Tripp on the Upper Peninsula road trip was the first back-to-back 20-point games since Feb. 4 and Feb. 9, 2023, when Tripp scored 25 at Northern Michigan and 27 at Ferris State in a pair of road victories.
