KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (8-16 overall, 5-12 GLIAC) was ahead of Parkside (20-7 overall, 13-4 GLIAC) by as many as 14 in the first half on Thursday night, 26-12, and carried a three-point lead into halftime, 28-25. However, the Rangers outscored the Warriors by 25, 44-19, in the final 20 minutes to defeat them by a score of 69-47 inside De Simone Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Wayne State scored 12 of the game's first 14 points, half of which came from Matt Coffey's (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) career-high 12 points. Parkside responded with seven-straight points of its own to pull within three, 12-9, before the Warriors countered with another run, this time a 9-0 spurt to go ahead by 12, 21-9, at the 7:26 mark. Once it was 26-12 (4:45 to play) in favor of the visitors as mentioned above, the home team ended the half on a 13-2 run to make it a two-point game at the break.
Second Half
The second half opened with four ties and five lead changes, the final deadlock being 41-41 at 12:27 before Parkside took the game over. From there until the final buzzer, the hosts outscored the away team by 28-6 en route to the final 22-point decision.
TEAM STATS
Parkside shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) for the game, but 62.5 percent (15-of-24) in the second half alone. Wayne State finished the night with a shooting clip of 38 percent (19-of-50) after 45.8 percent (11-of-24) before the intermission. The Warriors tallied four assists to 16 turnovers while the Rangers racked up 13 assists to 12 turnovers. UWP went 11-of-26 (42.3 percent) from behind the arc as opposed to 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) by WSU.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Coffey had 12 points, Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman) had all four of Wayne State's assists to go with two blocks, Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) brought down eight rebounds and Cortez Jackson (Detroit, Mich. / St. Clair Shores Lake Shore) notched a pair of steals.
LEADING THE RANGERS
A quartet of players scored in double figures including Sanmi Fajana (17 points), Rasheed Bello (16), Nick Brown (14), and Jamir Simpson (10).
UP NEXT
Wayne State will have to win at Purdue Northwest on Saturday (4 p.m. ET tip) to qualify for the GLIAC Tournament. A loss and the season is over for the Warriors. WSU defeated the Pride in Detroit back on Dec. 9, 74-55.
