Softball Blanked In First Two Games of 2023

WSU continues play at Lewis Dome Tournament on Friday.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (0-2 overall) began its 2023 campaign with a pair of shutout setbacks on Thursday evening at the Lewis Dome Tournament.  The Warriors lost 2-0 to the host Flyers (4-2 overall), then suffered a 10-0 loss to Minnesota-Duluth (12-3 overall) in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
WSU freshman hurler Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) limited Lewis to just six hits and two unearned runs in six innings of work.  However, the Wayne State offense managed just four singles, two by sophomore right fielder Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central), along with the first collegiate hit for rookie second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

Josephson led off the game with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hool, but the next two Warriors were retired.

Junior infielder Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) had a one-out single in the second and advanced to second when redshirt freshman outfielder Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) worked a walk on a 3-2 offering.  However, the next WSU batters struck out.

Lewis scored its first run in the bottom of the third on back-to-back infield singles with one out followed by a Wayne State miscue and a sacrifice fly by Kristen Graham.

Miller had a two-out walk in the fourth, and Josephson singled with two outs in the fifth but was struck by Hool's batted ball.

The Flyers added an insurance run in the sixth on a two-out single by Grace Erickson following a Warrior fielding error.

IN THE CIRCLE
Batton (0-1) surrendered two unearned runs, while striking out five and not allowing a walk.

Payton Wuske (1-0) went the distance for LU.  She struck out three and walked two, while allowing four singles.

Josephson had two hits, while Miller reached base twice via a hit and a walk.

LEADING THE FLYERS

GAME TWO RECAP
