Softball Offense Erupts To Salvage Split On Day Two of Dome Tournament

After losing game one 4-3, WSU pounded out 10 hits in a 9-5 win over Moorhead.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball team (1-3 overall) went 1-1 on Friday on at the Lewis University Dome Tournament.  The Warriors suffered a 4-3 setback to Walsh University (1-1 overall) after allowing three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  WSU rebounded for a 9-5 triumph over Minnesota State-Moorhead (10-1 overall) in the nightcap.

Game One Recap
Wayne State tied Walsh at 1-1 in the top of the fourth as Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had a leadoff single to center, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.).

The Warriors twice scored twice in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 advantage.  Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) had a leadoff bunt single and was sacrificed to second by Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.).  After a pop out, Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) tripled to left center scoring Hodder with the go-ahead run.  Hool greeted the Cavalier relief pitcher with an RBI single.

Walsh had a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one (3-2).  Following a walk, a WSU miscue allowed two unearned runs to score.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed four runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings on five hits.  She struck out three and walked two.  Junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) retired the lone batter she faced.

Olivia Betson started for Walsh and surrendered three earned runs on four hits in 4.2 innings.  She struck out six and did not walk a batter.  Lindsey Leeds earned the win in relief by tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.  Leeds struck out one and allowed two hits.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hool was the lone WSU batter with a multiple-hit effort.

LEADING THE CAVALIERS
Ashley Zgodzinski and Lindsey Bingham each had two hits accounting for four of Walsh's five hits.

Game Two Recap
Wayne State took an early 1-0 lead as leadoff batter Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) worked an eight-pitch walk.  After a sacrifice bunt by Hool, and a strikeout, Peru worked an eight-pitch walk.  A single by Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) plated the game's first run.

The Dragons tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.

In the top of the second, the Warriors tallied two runs with the inning beginning on a ground-rule double by Hodder.  Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) reached on a fielding error before Paolatto's sacrifice fly put WSU in front 2-1.  Wrubel later scored on an infield single by Hool.

Wayne State added four runs in the third as Peru reached on an error.  Ruczynski had a bunt single leading to an RBI groundout by Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.).  After Hodder singled and stole second, Ruczynski scored on a wild pitch as Wrubel earned a walk.  Another sacrifice fly by Paolatto preceded Wrubel scoring on a wild pitch for a 7-1 advantage.

MSUM scored twice in the bottom of the third, before the Warriors responded with two runs in the top of the fifth.  Wrubel singled and Miller walked leading to a two-run single by Hool.

The Dragons completed the scoring with a two-run home run.

IN THE CIRCLE
Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) earned the victory by striking out 11 and walking three.  She allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits, while tossing a complete game.

MSUM used three hurlers who allowed nine runs (four earned) on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking six.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hool, Ruczynski and Hodder each had two hits, while Miller walked three times and Wrubel scored three runs.  Hool drove in a team-best three runs.

LEADING THE DRAGONS
Annika Norman had two of MSUM's six hits.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude its opening weekend of play with a noon (Eastern) contest against William Jewell.
