Women's Basketball Season Ends With Quarterfinal Setback At #22-Michigan Tech

Tripp leads the Warriors with 15 points.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The 2022-23 Wayne State University women's basketball squad (14-13 overall) had its season conclude with an 80-71 setback at No. 22-Michigan Tech (24-5 overall) Wednesday evening in a GLIAC Quarterfinal contest at the SDC Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Both teams made two triples in the first 75 seconds as seniors Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) each drained long-range shots to knot the game at 3-3 and 6-6, respectively.  After a 7-3 Huskies run (Fugate with another triple), the Warriors evened the game at 13-13 with just under four minutes remaining in the opening stanza on lay-ups by sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) and senior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day).

However, Michigan Tech ended the period on a 13-2 run (both WSU points were free throws by Fugate) as the Warrior offense went 0-for-3 from the floor and had four turnovers in its final eight possessions of the quarter.  MTU's Ellie Mackay connected on three triples in scoring 13 of the Huskies 26 points in the period.

Second Quarter
A lay-up by McArthur just over a minute into the stanza cut the deficit to nine (26-17), but Michigan Tech answered with seven consecutive points before a lay-up by graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central).  The margin was 18 (37-19) after two foul shots by Mackay just past the mid-point of the quarter, but McArthur drained a shot from beyond the arc.  A three pointer by graduate student Mashayla Cecil (Murfreesboro, Tenn. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) was the only points WSU could muster in the final four minutes before intermission.

MTU had a 41-25 lead after 20 minutes with Mackay totaling 20 points (5-9 FG, 4-5 3-PT, 6-6 FT).  Ten WSU miscues led to the Huskies having a 17-2 edge in points off turnovers in the first half.

Third Quarter
Wayne State started to rally by scoring the first nine points after halftime to pull within seven (41-34).  Tripp and freshman Hillary Griffin (Jackson, Mich. / Parma Western) had back-to-back conventional three-point plays before Griffin drained a triple forcing Huskies head coach Sam Clayton to call a timeout.

A jumper by Moore and a long-range shot from Griffin on the ensuing possession cut the WSU deficit to six (45-39) with just over 6:30 remaining in the third period.  Over the next three minutes, Michigan Tech had a 13-6 scoring edge to lead 58-45.  A lay-up by Moore cut the margin to nine, but MTU had a 64-51 advantage after 30 minutes.  Griffin and Moore each scored nine points in quarter.

Fourth Quarter
A triple by sophomore Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) 2:20 into the final period made it an 11-point difference (66-55), but that would be as close as the Warriors would get for the next five minutes until two foul shots by Tripp trimmed the margin to 11 (76-65).

A free throw by Tripp and a late triple by Karasinski completed the scoring.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 39 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, compared to MTU's 42 percent (29-of-69).  The Warriors were 10-of-24 (42 percent) from beyond the arc, and the limited the Huskies to 9-of-28 (32 percent).  Both teams made 13 foul shots with WSU shooting 68 percent (13-of-19) and Michigan Tech connecting on 81 percent (13-of-16).  MTU had a 45-38 edge in rebounding and a 21-7 difference in points off turnovers as WSU had 15 turnover to 10 for the Huskies.
