Softball Splits On First Day Of Spring Break

After falling to Illinois-Springfield, WSU notched a 5-3 win over Truman State.

LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (4-6 overall) began its spring break trip with mixed results on Saturday.  WSU dropped its opener 16-0 in five innings to Illinois-Springfield (16-7 overall) before defeating Truman State (4-14 overall) 5-3 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Prairie Stars scored six times in the top of the first as the first four batters reached via a walk before an RBI single and a one-out bases clearing double by Taylor Zawacki.

UIS tallied four runs in the top of the third on four hits and a walk with the biggest hit being a two-out, two-run single by Ella Brinkley.

The visitors scored twice in the fourth and added four additional runs in the fifth on two singles, a double and two triples.

The Warriors had a base runner in four of the five innings, but could never get one to second base.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) suffered the loss to fall to 3-2.  She retired one of the seven batters she faced allowing six runs (five earned) on two hits and four walks.  Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) hurled the final 4.2 innings allowing 11 hits and 10 runs (nine earned).  Buckberger struck out three and walked four.

Reagan Miles (6-2) limited WSU to three singles and struck out four while not walking a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bonk, freshman outfielder Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) and senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) had the Wayne State hits.

LEADING THE PRAIRIE STARS
Isabella Wilson had three hits and two RBI, while Ramsey Armstrong and Zawacki each drove in three runs.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State rebounded by scoring once in each of the first three innings and holding on after taking a 5-1 lead in the fifth.

WSU's first came on a two-out infield single by O'Donnell.  Senior third baseman Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) had a one-out single through the left side to load bases.

The Warriors second inning began with a bunt single by Hodder, and back-to-back one-out singles by junior outfielder Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) and freshman second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) plated senior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) after a nifty slide around the catcher.

O'Donnell led off the third with a single to left, advanced to second on a bunt single by Hodder and scored on a single through the left side by Paolatto.

After Truman scored once in the bottom of the third, Wayne State added two insurance runs in the fifth.  Sophomore shortstop Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) had a leadoff double to left center and moved to third on Hodder's sacrifice bunt.  Paolatto reached on an error and stole second putting two runners in scoring position.  Wrubel scored on an RBI groundout by Miller, while Hool's single down the right field line plated Paolatto.

TSU manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.  After the first two batters were retired, a hit by pitch, a throwing error, a stolen base and a second throwing error of the inning allowed two Bulldog runners to score.

Truman State's first two batters in the bottom of the seventh reached.  A lineout double play helped immensely because the next batter reached before a fly out ended the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) earned her first career win allowing three runs (zero earned) on four hits in seven innings.  She struck out one and walked one.

Annabel Zimmer (2-3) started for TSU and pitched 2.1 innings surrendering three earned runs on nine hits.  Breianna Klein hurled the final 4.2 innings allowing two runs (zero earned) on three hits with one strikeout and zero walks.
