Softball Splits Again In Florida

WSU falls to Hillsdale; beats Southern Connecticut State

LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (5-7) continued its win one-lose one on Sunday, which was day two of its spring break trip.  Three WSU miscues led to five unearned runs in a 9-4 setback to Hillsdale (8-8 overall) in game one, before the Warrior offense pounded out 14 hits in an 11-3 six-inning triumph over Southern Connecticut State (1-5 overall).

GAME ONE RECAP
Hillsdale scored twice in the top of the first as a two-out fly ball to left field was dropped allowing two runners to score.

HC added three runs in the second after the first two batters struck out.  After a hit by pitch, a grounder to short was misplayed putting runners on the corners.  A mishandled but allowed one run to score, while Charger Jenna Cantalupo followed with a two-run double.

Hillsdale added one run in the fourth as the second batter reached on a one-out strikeout wild pitch.  With two outs, a blooper that tipped off the pitcher's glove was followed by a walk to load the bases.  A hit by pitch on the very next offering made it 6-0.

WSU scored once in the fourth on a one-out single to center by sophomore shortstop Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan), and a two-out walk to senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) followed by an RBI single from sophomore center fielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).

The Warriors scored twice in the fifth as the first three batters all reached.  Junior right fielder Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) had a bunt single and freshman second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) followed with an RBI double over the left fielder.  Junior designated player Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) then had an RBI single to right.

Hillsdale scored three runs in the seventh on a walk, an infield single and back-to-back doubles.

WSU scored once in the bottom of the seventh as Bonk had a leadoff single, and senior third baseman Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) reached on an error.  With two outs, Hodder's single scored pinch-runner Sydney Bogden (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower).

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Hayden Batton (1-4) went the distance for Wayne State allowing nine runs (but just four earned).  The Plainfield, Ind. native (Avon H.S.) struck out five and walked three.

Emma Vis (2-1) pitched the first six innings for Hillsdale and allowed three earned runs.  She struck out two and walked two.  Mackenzi Maxson pitched the seventh and allowed one unearned run on two hits with one strikeout.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hool had three hits and an RBI, while both Bonk and Wrubel and two hits as part of WSU's 11-hit attack.

LEADING THE CHARGERS
Hailey Holtman had two hits and scored twice, while Taylor Lewis had two RBI and scored twice.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State scored three times in the top of the second, before the Owls tallied a pair of runs in the third.  WSU exploded for seven runs in the fourth and added its final run in the sixth.

Peru had a one-out infield single in the second and moved to second on a SCSU error.  A sacrifice bunt by Hodder advanced both runners before Ruczynski had a two-run double to right center.  Senior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) walked on four pitches, before Miller's single plated Ruczynski.

Southern Connecticut State's two runs in the third came via a single, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a ground-rule double.

The Warriors big inning started with a Miller single and Hool reaching on a botched sacrifice bunt.  Wrubel's bunt single loaded the bases, before Bonk smacked a ground-rule double.  Wrubel scored on an Owls throwing error.  With one out, Hodder's sacrifice fly plated Bonk, prior to Ruczynski's RBI double.  Paolatto and Hool each contributed an RBI single in the frame.

SCSU extended the game with a run in the fifth on a walk, a passed ball and a double.

Wayne State's run in the top of the sixth came after a very strange beginning.  Paolatto fouled an 0-1 offering off her leg but neither umpire saw it, so after the catcher threw the ball back to the pitcher, who then relayed it to first for the typical 2-1-3 putout.  Hool singled with two outs and went to third on a fielding error before scoring on a passed ball.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) earned her first collegiate win (1-1) by scattering eight hits in six innings and surrendering three runs (two earned).  She struck out five and walked two.

Emma Gorham (0-1) started for SCSU and allowed three unearned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.  She recorded one strikeout, while walking three.  Madison Shura pitched 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs (two earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts.  Ashley Lewis pitched the final two innings allowing one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller, Hool and Bonk each had three hits, while Ruczynski chipped in with two doubles and three RBI.

LEADING THE OWLS
Jacqueline Dumont had two doubles and three RBI, while Angela Barresi contributed two hits.
