Softball Continues To Split

Warriors defeat Bloomfield, but fall to No. 9-UIndy.

LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (6-8 overall) split for the third straight playing day on its spring break trip.  WSU rallied from an early deficit to defeat Bloomfield College (2-17 overall) 12-1 in five innings, before falling 7-4 to ninth-ranked Indianapolis (21-3 overall).

GAME ONE RECAP
The Bears manufactured a run in the bottom of the first on a walk, a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt, then scoring on a throw to second.

The Warriors answered back in the top of the second as juior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) had a leadoff single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.).  After a ground out, senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) smacked her first career home run after fouling off a 2-2 offering.

Wayne State tallied five runs in the top of the third sending 11 batters to the plate.  Senior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) started the frame with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior right fielder Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).  Freshman second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) singled with both runners scoring on a double by sophomore shortstop Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan), which prompted a Bloomfield pitching change.  Following a fly out, Peru had an RBI double, freshman left fielder Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) singled and Hodder had a two-run double to make it 7-1.

In the fourth, Hool had a leadoff single and moved to third on a double by Wrubel before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Bonk.

WSU tacked on four runs in the fifth sending 10 batters to the dish this time.  Miller worked a one-out walk, Wrubel had a two-out single and Bonk walked to load the bases.  The next two batters both reached on BC fielding errors, each plating a run.  Pinch-hitter Sydney Bogden (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) walked with the bases loaded as did sophomore centerfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) earned her second consecutive victory by limiting the Bears to one earned run on four hits in five innings.  She struck out six and walked two.

Jocelyn Moody (0-5) was the first of three hurlers for Bloomfield.  She surrendered five earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.  Jillian Holmes worked 1.2 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits with a walk.  Kate Juskiewicz pitched the final inning allowing four unearned runs on one hit and four walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wrubel had three hits and two RBI, while Hodder contributed two extra-base hits and four RBI.  Hool and Paolatto each chipped in with two hits apiece.

LEADING THE BEARS
Spencer Ventura reached base twice on a hit and a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State fell behind early against the ninth-ranked Greyhounds and could never catch up in a 7-4 setback.

UIndy scored twice int he top of the first on four walks, a sacrifice fly and a throwing error.

Indianapolis doubled its lead to 4-0 in the second on two walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a two-run double by Maddy Stout.

WSU cut its deficit in half with a pair of run in the bottom of the second.  Bonk and Peru started the frame with singles and both moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by ODonnell.  Bonk scored when Hodder's ground ball was misplayed, with Peru scoring on a throwing error.

The Greyhounds added two insurance runs in the fifth on three singles and a Warrior miscue.

UIndy made it 7-2 in the sixth on three consecutive singles and an RBI ground out.

Wayne State kept battling and scored twice in the sixth.  Peru had a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single by O'Donnell, which preceded an RBI double by Hodder.  Ruczynski's RBI single put runners on the corners with zero outs, but the next three batters were retired.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (3-3) pitched the first inning-plus allowing four runs (three earned) on six walks and no hits with one strikeout.  Freshman Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) tossed the final six innings allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Kenzee Smith (12-3) went the distance for the Greyhounds surrendering four runs (three earned) on a season-high eight hits with six strikeouts to one walk.  The four runs allowed by Smith were the most since the season opener for UIndy.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bonk and O'Donnell each had two hits, while Hodder drove in a pair of runs.

LEADING THE GREYHOUNDS
Stout, Megan Nichols and Emily O'Connor each had two hits as the top three in the lineup reached base a total of nine times.

UP NEXT
After an off day on Wednesday, Wayne State will face the Mary Marauders (3-12 overall) at 1:30 PM on Thursday, followed by a 3:45 PM contest vs. Alliance University (formerly Nyack).
