AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (11-2 overall) ran its winning streak to five on Sunday afternoon thanks to a two-game sweep of Sioux Falls (1-13), 8-2 and 4-0. Next up, the Warriors will conclude play in the RussMatt Invitational on Monday with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch against D'Youville.
GAME ONE RECAP
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. / Canton) picked up his first win of the season after throwing five shutout innings with five hits allowed, no walks and four strikeouts. In relief,
Hector Jaimes (Trenton, Mich. / Detroit Western International) and
Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville) handled the rest of the workload with 1.1 IP and 0.2 IP, respectively.
The production from those three arms was more than enough with the Warriors turning in another big day at the plate.
WSU used six hits to score eight runs including one in the first and a seven spot in the second. Five of those six hits came from the top three spots in the lineup including
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI),
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich. / Hartland) (1-for-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB).
Aside from that trio,
Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson),
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford),
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich. / Richmond), and
Noah Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville) each scored a run.
GAME TWO RECAP
It was much of the same in game two as
Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) picked up his third victory of the season (3-0), which is tied with
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) for the team lead. Kilander lasted 6.1 scoreless innings with just four hits surrendered, not a single free pass and eight punchouts.
David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) tossed the final two-thirds of a frame out of the bullpen.
Offensively, Wayne State scored its first run in the third when
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) drew a bases-loaded walk scoring
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich. / Woodhaven). Then, in the seventh, DeLanoy singled in Maury, Ramirez tripled in DeLanoy, and Tanderys pushed across Ramirez with a sacrifice fly to center.
DeLanoy was the lone Warrior with multiple hits (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI), but spots two through eight registered one hit each.
