Softball Rallies From 3-0 Deficit To Split With Findlay

Peru smacks team-leading third home run of the season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (10-10 overall) splits its home-opening doubleheader with the University of Findlay (15-6 overall) Wednesday afternoon at Gary L Bryce Field.  The visiting Oilers took the opener 4-2, before the Warriors rallied for a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
UF grabbed an early lead in the top of the first as Avery Shepherd reached on a throwing error, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Olivia Carlton.

Findlay extended its advantage to 3-0 in the second as Alexys Antal reached on a one-out error, advanced to third on a single by Bailey Bates and both runners scored on a two-out single by Shepherd.

WSU cuts its deficit to one (3-2) with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.  Senior third baseman Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) had a one-out single and senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) followed with a double to left center putting two runners in scoring position.  A single to right center by sophomore center fielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) plated Peru, while Hodder scored during a run down of Ruczynski between first and second.

Shepherd knocked in UF's final run with a one-out double in the fourth scoring Bates, who had singled.

Wayne State never had a runner past first base over the final five innings.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) was the tough-luck loser as she allowed just one earned run (four total runs) on nine hits in seven innings.  Batton struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Emma Jones (8-1) went the distance for the Oilers, striking out two and not allowing a walk.  She surrendered two earned runs on five hits.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Five different WSU batters had a hit with Hodder notching a double.

LEADING THE OILERS
Shepherd had three hits and drove in three runs, while Bates had two hits and scored twice.

GAME TWO RECAP
For the second straight meeting, Findlay took a 3-0 lead.  The Oilers scored single runs in each of the first three innings.  Kayla Dykin had a two-out RBI double in the first; Shepherd had a two-out infield single scored Kaitlynn Briggs in the second; and Briggs walked with the bases loaded in the third.

Wayne State started its comeback in the bottom of the third as junior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) had a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).  With two outs and down 1-2 in the count, junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) doubled to left center scoring Miller.  Peru then laced a 3-1 offering into left center plating Bonk with WSU's second run.

The Warriors tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth as Ruczynski had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.).  Ruczynski was able to score as sophomore Sydney Bogden (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) beat out an infield hit plus the pitcher fell down and threw wild to first.

In the bottom of the fifth, Peru drilled a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence just inside the foul pole.  It was Peru's team-leading third round-tripper of the season.

Findlay had a golden chance to tie the game in the top of the sixth as Briggs singled on an 0-2 pitch.  Pinch-runner Cassie Warner went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved to third on a ground out.  Annika Bredel had a two-out single into left center and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.  Inexplicably, Warner was not running and was no where near home plate when the out was made at second base.

Dykin had a one-out hit in the seventh and went to second on a wild pitch, then advanced to third on a ground out.  Bogden ended the contest with a nice running catch off the bat of Antal.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) earned her team-best fourth win of the season.  She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits while tossing a complete game.  She did not record a strikeout, and walked four.

Kora Navarro (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 4.1 innings.  She struck out five and walked two.  Molly Pfiffner hurled 1.2 innings of hitless relief.  She allowed one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Peru went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI as seven different WSU batters had hits.

LEADING THE OILERS
Dykin went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Carlton contributed two singles.
