DETROIT -- Fueled by a complete-game effort from both starting pitchers,
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) and
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich. / Yale), the Wayne State University baseball team (14-3 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) opened league play with a two-game sweep of Davenport (6-16 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) on Friday, 4-3 and 4-1. Next up, the Warriors will host Parkside in a doubleheader on Sunday with game one scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
GAME ONE RECAP
Fitzpatrick (4-0) gave up three runs, only two earned, on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in his seven innings pitched. The complete game is the senior's first of the season and third in his career as he needed 96 pitches on 28 batters faced to do so.
Offensively, Wayne State struck first with a run in each of the first two innings. In the bottom of the first,
Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) singled in
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) with a base knock to left-center field and in the second,
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford) blasted a solo homerun to left, the first of his career. After Davenport made it a 3-2 game in the fifth, the Warriors' insurance was provided by
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) (doubled in
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich. / Hartland)) and Tanderys (doubled in Ramirez), both of which came in the sixth.
GAME TWO RECAP
As good as Fitzpatrick was, Korolden raised the bar in the nightcap. The redshirt senior surrendered just one earned run on three hits with only one free pass and eight punchouts. Korolden's first complete game of the spring gives him four in his career after 112 pitches on 31 hitters faced on Friday.
At the dish, Tanderys brought in WSU's first three runs thanks to a two-run triple in the first (scored Ramirez and DeLanoy) and RBI single in the fourth (scored Ramirez). After DU scored its lone run in the fifth,
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) made it a three-run game in the seventh when
Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) came in on his RBI groundout to first base.
