The Warriors Slug Their Way to Sweep of Parkside

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (16-3 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) swept Parkside (6-10 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, but the two wins couldn't have been decided more differently. The Warriors walked it off in game one, 7-4, with a three-run homerun off the bat of Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) before blowing out the Rangers in the nightcap, 15-2.

Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) got the start in game one and lasted 5.1 innings with four earned runs surrendered on three hits, two walks and five strikeouts. In relief, Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich. / Jonesville) threw the final one and two-thirds frames with only one hit given up, one free pass and a punchout while improving to 2-0 on the season.

At the plate, Wayne State didn't get on the board until the fourth when Tanderys singled in Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich. / Hartland). The very next inning, the Warriors made it a 3-3 ballgame when DeLanoy brought in a pair of runs, Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett), thanks to a double to left field.

Parkside retook the lead in the sixth, 4-3, before the home half of that frame when Miller reached on a two-out throwing error by the third baseman, which allowed Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort) to come around from first base and make it a tie game once again.

In the bottom of the seventh, CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) was hit by a pitch and two batters later, Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second for Tanderys' heroics. The third baseman welcomed new pitcher, Kaleb Schulist, with a three-run blast to right, his first round tripper of the spring.

In game two, Wayne State scored a season-high 15 runs on 15 hits, all of which came after Parkside took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Five different Warriors finished with multiple hits including Foley (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, Maury (2-for-4, 3 R, 2 BB), Ramirez (2-for-4, 2 R, 4 RBI), Tanderys (2-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI), and Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford) (3-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI).

Six of WSU's 15 hits went for extra bases including doubles from Ramirez (x2), Hatzigeorgiou and Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton). Tanderys (two-run homer in the fifth) went deep for the second time in as many games and Hatzigeorgiou (two-run blast in the second) also hit his second of the year.

Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. / Canton) threw five innings and improved to 2-0 while allowing two earned runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts. After that, David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison), Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter), Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville), and Mitchell Mychajluk (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) tossed one inning each to handle the final four.

Next up on the schedule, Wayne State will host Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday in one nine inning game beginning at 3 p.m.
