Softball Falls Twice At No. 7-Grand Valley State

Warriors blanked 8-0 in the opener, then drop nightcap 5-1.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (12-20 overall, 2-10 GLIAC) played twice on Wednesday afternoon at seventh-ranked Grand Valley State (29-3 overall, 11-0 GLIAC) with the host Lakers winning the opener 8-0 in five innings and game two by a 5-1 score.

GAME ONE RECAP
GVSU ace Hannah Beatus limited the Warriors to one infield hit and one other WSU hitter reached on an error as she faced 17 batters in the five-inning affair.

The Lakers scored three runs in each of the first two innings and added a pair of runs in the third.

Grand Valley State totaled five hits in the first inning and three more in the second frame, including a two-run double by Lydia Goble.  Joanna Cirrincione contributed a two-run double in the third.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Haydon Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) surrendered six earned runs on eight hits in two innings with one strikeout and one walk.  Junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) tossed the final two innings allowing two earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Beatus threw just 48 pitches (37 of them strikes) in pitching the one-hit shutout.  She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bonk had an infield single leading off the second, while senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) reached on a one-out error in the first.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Kaitlyn Lynch and Goble each had two hits, while Goble drove in a team-high three runs.

GAME TWO RECAP
GVSU scored two unearned runs in the second, added two more in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles from Cirrincione and Goble, then scored once in the fifth.

Wayne State's lone run came in the third as freshman left fielder Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) had a leadoff single, went to second on a one-out single to center by sophomore Sydney Bogden (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower), then scored on a two-out single by Hodder.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) allowed just three earned runs (five total) on seven hits in six innings.  She walked five and did not record a strikeout.

Nevaeh Ingram tossed a complete game for GVSU limiting WSU to one earned run on four hits in seven innings.  She notched five strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Senior Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) had WSU's other hit (beside the three mentioned above).

LEADING THE LAKERS
Cirrincione had two hits and two RBI.

UP NEXT
Wayne State is slated to host a pair of doubleheaders this weekend against Parkside (Saturday at 1 p.m.) and Purdue Northwest (Sunday at noon) weather permitting.
