ALLENDALE, Mich. -- After dropping game one, 4-2, at Grand Valley State (21-10 overall, 9-6 GLIAC) on Friday, the Wayne State University baseball team (26-5 overall, 13-2 GLIAC) bounced back for a 5-2 victory in the nightcap to salvage the split. Next up, the Warriors and Lakers will play another doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch in game one scheduled for noon.
GAME ONE RECAP
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) made the start, but suffered his first loss of the season (6-1) with 6.1 innings pitched, four earned runs given up on 10 hits, one walk, and five strikeouts on 102 pitches.
Offensively, Wayne State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) singled right back up the middle to score
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford) switched places with
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) at second base thanks to a double to left.
However, Grand Valley State went on to score a run in the second, tie the game in the fifth and walk it off in the seventh.
GAME TWO RECAP
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. / Canton) came through with 6.2 innings of two-run pitching to improve to 4-0 on the season. Marano surrendered those two earned runs on six hits with four free passes and six punchouts on 132 pitches.
In relief,
Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) picked up his second save of the season with 2.1 nearly perfect frames, no hits allowed, one walk, and three strikeouts.
Scoring wise, Grand Valley State flipped the script and went ahead 2-0 this time. In the third,
Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) put Wayne State on the board with a solo home run to left field, his second of the season.
Fast forward to the seventh where Maury gave his team the lead with a two-run double (Foley and Miller scored) to right and
Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) added some insurance with a two-run blast to right, his team-leading fifth of the spring.
