ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (27-6 overall, 14-3 GLIAC) and Grand Valley State (22-11 overall, 10-7 GLIAC) played a second-straight doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with the Warriors winning big in game one, 14-1, and the Lakers taking the nightcap, 8-5. Next up for WSU is a road trip to Ashland on Tuesday for one nine-inning non-conference affair against the Eagles.
GAME ONE RECAP
Starting on the mound,
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich. / Yale) improved to 6-1 with his third complete game of the season, all of which have come in his last five outings. Korolden gave up one unearned run on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts through 93 pitches.
Offensively, Wayne State scored three runs in the first inning, three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the sixth, and five more in the seventh. Six of the Warriors' 16 hits were of the extra-base variety, including four home runs and two doubles.
Long-ball wise, four is WSU's most of the spring and it included a three-run shot from
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) in the first, three-run blast from
Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) in the third, solo jack from
Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort) in the fourth, and two-run dinger from
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton) in the seventh.
All nine of Wayne State's starting batters scored a run, nine players brought in at least one RBI and five of the nine starters recorded multiple hits. The Warriors scored 10 or more runs for the ninth time this season (9-0 record) and eight or more for the 15th instance (14-1).
GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Ramirez doubled in a pair of runs,
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford) brought in one with a sacrifice fly to right field,
Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) singled in the fourth run, and
Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) made it five with an RBI base knock up the middle.
However, Grand Valley State went on to tally four runs in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to make it 8-5 for good.
Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) made the start with two innings pitched and gave up four earned runs on six hits with no walks and one strikeout. In relief,
Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) (4-2) suffered the loss after two frames of work before
Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) (1.0 IP) and
David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) (3.0 IP) closed out the game.
