Softball Splits Doubleheader With Purdue Northwest

WSU drops 4-2 decision in opener; claims game two 5-3.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (14-22 overall, 4-12 GLIAC) split a home twinbill on Tuesday vs. Purdue University Northwest (26-18 overall, 9-7 GLIAC).  The visiting Pride rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win game one 4-2.  The Warriors bounced back for a 5-3 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU snapped a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second in just four pitches.  Sophomore Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) singled up the middle on an 0-1 offering, then freshman Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont. ) smacked her first collegiate home run on an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fourth when PNW's first four batters all reached, which included three doubles.  Jessica DeBoer doubled and Selena Michko followed with a single.  Madison Schultz had an RBI double and Jocey Gault then doubled to left and took third on a Warrior miscue.  After back-to-back infield ground outs, the Pride added an insurance run on WSU's second error of the inning.

Wayne State loaded the bases in the fourth after the first two batters were retired, but a ground out ended the frame.

A two-out double in the fifth Josephson preceded freshman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and senior Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) starting the sixth with back-to-back singles, but the next three Warriors were retired.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) tossed a complete-game allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits.  She struck out four and walked four.

Maddison Roop (6-4) went the distance for Purdue Northwest limiting WSU to two earned runs on seven hits.  She struck out four and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Josephson and Paolatto each had two hits, while O'Donnell drove in both WSU runs.

DeBoer had two hits , while Gault had the game-winning hit with a two-run double in the fourth.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State ended its nine-game losing skein against Purdue Northwest with a 5-3 triumph in game two.

PNW manufactured a run in the top of the first on a walk, a stolen base, a ground out and a single by DeBoer.

WSU tied the game in the bottom of the first as junior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) had a leadoff single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.), moved to third on a sharp single to left by sophomore Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan), and scored on an infield dribbler up the middle by Josephson.

The Warriors grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third as Hodder drew a five-pitch walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wrubel.  Josephson doubled in Hodder to make it 2-1.  After a strikeout, junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) blooped an 0-2 pitch down the right field line scoring Josephson.

The Pride cut the deficit to 3-2 with a walk and a one-out double by Allison Arnold in the fourth.

Purdue Northwest tied the game in the top of the sixth as Schultz walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a single and scored on bases loaded walk to pinch-hitter Darcy Barkauskas.  Bonk then retired the next two PNW hitters on a strikeout and foul out.

In the bottom of the sixth, Buckberger delivered a pinch-hit single to left center.  Miller's sacrifice bunt advanced Hool to second base (Hool re-entered for Buckberger).  Hodder ripped her team-leading 16th double to left center scoring Hool with the go-ahead run.  After Wrubel reached on an error, Josephson doubled down the left field to make it 5-3.
