WSU Recognizes Top Student-Athletes At Warrior Rise Luncheon

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University Department of Athletics honored all Warrior student-athletes during its inaugural Warrior Rise Recognition Luncheon held earlier today at the Matthaei.

Eight Deans' Award winners were also recognized for having the highest cumulative grade-point average among all student-athletes in that particular college:

* College of Liberal Arts and Sciences - Senior volleyball outside hitter Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) is the 2022-23 recipient of the Deans' Award from CLAS.  A Biochem & Chemical Biology major, Morrison earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) accolades all seven semesters with a perfect 4.00 term GPA four times.  She is a three-time (2020-21, 2021 and 2022) GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team honoree.  In her senior campaign, Morrison appeared in all 30 matches, starting 29 times while competing in 110 sets.  She was second on the team in service aces (32).  A multi-year recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award, Morrison played in 73 matches and 233 sets in her Warrior career totaling 402 kills and 329 digs.

* College of Education - Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse), a senior on the softball squad, was selected to receive the Deans' Award from the College of Education.  The Sport Management major has earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all seven semesters with a perfect 4.00 term GPA twice.  Nadolny will be a three-time (2021, 2022 and 2023) GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Teams selection.  A Second Team All-GLIAC honoree in 2021, she has missed the last two seasons due to an illness.  Nadolny started all 56 games played in 2020 (shortened season due to COVID) and 2021 hitting .372 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI.  In the circle, she compiled an 11-7 record with a 1.62 ERA in 108 innings.

* Mike Ilitch School of Business - Junior baseball pitcher Mitchell Mychajluk (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) is the 2022-23 Deans' Award recipient from the Mike Ilitch School of Business.  A Finance major, Mychajluk has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all five semesters with a perfect 4.00 term three times.  A 2023 Mike Ilitch School of Business 25 under 25 honoree, he will earn his second consecutive GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Teams recognition later this spring.  Mychajluk has pitched in a career-best five games this year compiling a 1.93 ERA.  He was also a 2021-22 recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award.

* College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts - Junior Mikaela Owen (Bridgman, Mich.), a member of the women's track and field squad, is the 2022-23 recipient of the Deans' Award from the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts.  She'll receive her fourth GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team Award at the conclusion of the outdoor track season.  A Design major, Owen has earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) status all five semesters, twice with a perfect 4.00 term GPA.  She was a 2021-22 recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award.  Owen has run the 200m dash, 400m dash and 4x100m relay this spring.

* College of Engineering - Senior men's cross country runner Ransom Allen (Ithaca, Mich.) is the 2022-23 Deans' Award honoree from the College of Engineering.  Allen, a Mechanical Engineering major, has accomplished a lot both on the course and in the classroom.  He collected All-American honors after placing ninth at the NCAA Championships last December in Seattle.  It was the second consecutive year Allen garnered All-American accolades (placed 25th in 2021).  He is a two-time All-Region honoree, and a three-time All-GLIAC finisher.  Allen earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) recognition all seven semesters, including six consecutive terms with a 4.00 GPA.  He was a 2021-22  CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team selection.

* College of Nursing - Marissa Woida (Lincoln Park, Mich. / Wyandotte Roosevelt), a senior diver on the women's swimming and diving team, is the recipient of the 2022-23 Deans' Award from the College of Nursing.  She is a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team selection, and a 2021-22 First Team CSCAA Scholar All-American.  Woida earned Honorable Mention All-American honors at the 2022 NCAA Championships after finishing 16th in the one-meter diving competition.  A two-time D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award honoree, Woida has finished in the top five at the GLIAC Championships four times (twice on each board).

* Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences - Men's swimming graduate student Noah Barstad (Allen Park, Mich.) is the 2022-23 Deans' Award honoree from the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.  He is currently pursuing a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy after earning a bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sport Science.  A four-year member of the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team, Barstad is also a three-time recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award.  He competed in 34 meets in his career primarily in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly and 100 back.

* Honors College - Junior women's tennis player Suki Mandair (Dexter, Mich. / Ann Arbor Skyline) is the 2022-23 Deans' Award recipient from the Honors College.  A Philosophy Honors major, she has earned a 4.00 term GPA all five semesters.  Mandair is a two-time ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete and will receive her second GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team recognition at the conclusion of the spring season.  She has recorded 38 career wins (20 in singles and 18 in doubles).

Fifty-two (52) student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.00 term GPA for the Fall 2022 semester with nearly 78 percent of Warrior student-athletes having a cumulative GPA above a 3.00 after the Fall 2022 semester.
