HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University baseball team made quick work of Purdue Northwest (5-17 overall, 1-7 GLIAC) in game one on Sunday, 5-0, before coming from behind to win the nightcap, 6-5, and run its winning streak to seven. At 19-3 overall and 7-0 in GLIAC play, the Warriors will be at Grand Valley State (16-6 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) for a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 1 p.m. in Allendale.
GAME ONE RECAP
Fitzpatrick (5-0) was brilliant again as he twirled a three-hit complete-game shutout and did so with only 80 pitches in seven innings while facing 26 batters, just five over the minimum. The 6-5 right-hander struck out three, walked one and lowered his season ERA to 1.39, a number that ranks first in the GLIAC.
At the plate, the Warriors scored four of their five runs in the second inning before tacking on another in the sixth. In that top of the second,
Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort) got the party started with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford).
Two batters later,
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) doubled in
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich. / Richmond),
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) scored
Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) with a sacrifice fly to center and then
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich. / Hartland) doubled in Foley.
Fast forward to the sixth where Foley hit a base knock to right and Hatzigeorgiou came around from second base to touch the plate and make it 5-0.
GAME TWO RECAP
Trailing 5-4 with one out in the bottom of the ninth, DeLanoy stepped to the plate with Maury at first base (via a walk) and belted a 3-1 offering over the fence in straightaway center field.
Jumping back to the beginning of the scoring, Wayne State struck first with a two spot in the fourth thanks to a two-run double off the bat of
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich. / Woodhaven) that pushed across both
Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton). In the fifth, Purdue Northwest punched back with four runs of its own, all of which were unearned.
Two innings later in the seventh, DeLanoy brought in the first of his three RBI after a groundout to the shortstop that scored Miller and pulled the Warriors within one, 4-3. However, in the eighth, the Pride made it a 5-3 game with an RBI single, but WSU simply wouldn't go away. In the home half of that frame, Hatzigeorgiou went from first to third on a failed pick off attempt and scored on a balk to cut the deficit to one, 5-4.
That set the stage for DeLanoy's heroics in the bottom of the ninth, Wayne State's second walk-off win in the past five contests.
On the mound,
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. / Canton) received a no decision with 5.1 innings pitched, four runs given up, all of which were unearned, no free passes, and one punchout.
In relief,
David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) took care of an inning and two-thirds (2 H, 0 BB, 1 K) before
Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) handled the final two frames (3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K).
