ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Thanks to a sweep of Grand Valley State (16-8 overall, 5-4 GLIAC) on Monday, the 12th-ranked Wayne State University baseball team (21-3 overall, 9-0 GLIAC) has won nine games in a row and 15 of its last 16. The Warriors took care of business against the Lakers thanks to scores of 7-1 and 12-8. Next up, WSU will take a break from league play and travel to Northwood on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Timberwolves.
GAME ONE RECAP
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich. / Yale) improved to 3-1 as he went the distance for the second time in as many outings, this time with seven frames of work. Monday, Korolden did so on 107 pitches with one earned run surrendered on five hits, no walks and six strikeouts. The Yale, Mich. native's season ERA is down to 2.60 in 27.2 innings and his WHIP has fallen to .98 for the spring.
Offensively, Wayne State scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, one in the fifth, and another in the seventh. The Warriors needed just five hits to score those seven runs as the home team committed three errors, walked five batters and hit two more.
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) brought in a pair of runs while
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton),
Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich. / Richmond) each brought in one. The first three of those four made a mark in the hit column along with
Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) down at the nine spot.
Run-scoring wise,
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline), Maury,
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich. / Hartland), Ramirez (x2),
Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort), and Miller were the ones to touch the plate for the visitors.
GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State made it seven games with 10 or more runs this season, three of which have come in conference play. In game two on Monday, the Warriors racked up 12 more runs on 13 hits scoring six runs in the second inning, two in the fifth, three in the sixth, and one more in the ninth for good measure.
The 2-3-4 spots (Maury, DeLanoy and Ramirez) in the WSU batting order went a combined 7-for-15 (.467 batting average) and were three of four Warriors to register a multi-hit game along with
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton) in the seven hole. Eight of the nine starters scored a run, four of them scored more than once and five of them tallied multiple RBI.
On the mound,
Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) made the start before throwing four innings with three earned runs given up on eight hits, two free passes and three punchouts. Out of the bullpen,
Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville) was the most effective and picked up his first win as a Warrior (1-0) thanks to a scoreless fifth. After that,
Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) pitched the final four innings.
