UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The seventh-ranked Wayne State University baseball team (29-8 overall, 16-4 GLIAC) took game one at Saginaw Valley State (20-18 overall, 11-9 GLIAC) on Saturday, 5-3, before dropping the nightcap, 4-3. Next up, these two teams will conclude their four-game series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
GAME ONE RECAP
With the game tied, 3-3, in the top of the seventh,
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) stepped to the plate with
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) on first base after a leadoff walk. Ramirez proceeded to double to right-center field, Maury came all the way around to score and Wayne State had taken its first lead of the game. Two batters later, Ramirez would come in to make it 5-3 after a
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford) groundout to third.
The Warriors first got on the board with two runs in the fifth when
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich. / Woodhaven) scored on Maury's fielder's choice to second and then
Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) came in when the Cardinals' third baseman made an error. The next inning, WSU tied it for a second time as Miller singled in Ray.
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) improved to 7-1 (tied with
Ryan Korolden for team lead in wins) while going the distance for the fifth time this season (tied for GLIAC lead). Fitzpatrick gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts, which is one off his season high and two away from his career best.
GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State was ahead by two, 3-1, in the bottom of the eighth inning when Saginaw Valley State's Austin Schweiger hit a three-run home run to left field that put his team ahead, 4-3.
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. / Canton) suffered the loss, his first of the season (4-1), while throwing 7.1 innings and 101 pitches. Marano gave up four earned runs on six hits with two free passes and four punchouts. In relief,
Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) handled the final two-thirds of a frame.
The Warriors' first three runs scored when Ramirez singled in both Maury and
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) in the first before Ray doubled in Hatzigeorgiou in the seventh.
