Softball Drops Pair To No. 7-GVSU On Senior Day

Warriors will end regular season with four consecutive road contests.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-26 overall, 5-15 GLIAC) closed out its 2023 regular-season home slate with a pair of setback to seventh-ranked Grand Valley State (35-3 overall, 17-0 GLIAC) Sunday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field.  GVSU won the opener 10-2 in five innings before taking the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
The visiting Lakers scored twice in the top of the first on an RBI double by Joanna Cirrincione and a sacrifice fly by Lydia Goble.

Grand Valley State increased its lead to 3-0 second as Kaitlyn Lynch scored from second on an infield hit by Circcincione.

The Warriors pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the second as sophomore Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had a leadoff single, and moved to second on a ground out.  Freshman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) reached on an infield single before junior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) laced the first pitch from GVSU hurler Hannah Beatus into left center field for a two-run double.

The Lakers added three runs in the third on an RBI double by Morgan Spicer, and a two-run triple by Megan Koenigshof.

After neither team scored in the fourth, Grand Valley State tallied four runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Cirrincione, a two-run triple by Goble and an RBI single by Morgan Wagner.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) started for WSU and allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 2.1 innings.  She walked one and did not record a strikeout.  Classmate Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) pitched the final 2.2 innings surrendering four earned runs on six hits with one strikeout.

Beatus (18-1) allowed two earned runs on seven hits in five innings.  She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller had two hits and two RBI.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Lynch and Cirrincione each had three hits with Cirrincione and Goble each recording three RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
GVSU took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first on three consecutive RBI hits by Wagner, Kelsey Komorous and Spicer.

Wayne State scored once in the bottom of the first as three Warriors  -- Miller, senior Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) and sophomore Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) -- all walked and with one out Bonk hit a sacrifice fly to center.

Grand Valley added a pair of runs in the second on an RBI single by Goble and a sacrifice fly by Komorous.

After a scoreless third inning, the Lakers scored twice in the fourth.  Goble hit a leadoff home run, and with two outs Eliana Eilandlaced an RBI double to right center.

Goble had a two-out RBI single up the middle in the fifth to make it 8-1.

The game's final run came in the top of the sixth as Lynch had a two-out bases loaded single.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (6-7) went the distance for WSU allowing nine earned runs on 15 hits in six innings.  She struck out four and walked five.

Ashley Platek (12-0) tossed a complete game allowing just two hits and one earned run in six innings.  She struck out three and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bonk and senior Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) had the two WSU hits.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Goble and Komorous each had three hits with Goble driving in three and Komorous notching two RBI.

SENIORS
It was the final home games for seniors Emily Guzzo, Gabby Kaple, Brooke Nadolny, Breanna Paolatto and Taryn Peru.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude the regular-season with a pair of road GLIAC doubleheaders.  The Warriors travel to Davenport on Wednesday, and Ferris State on Friday.
