Softball Begins Final Week of Regular Season With Two Losses At Davenport

Warriors fall 9-1 and 9-8 against the Panthers.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-28 overall, 5-17 GLIAC) dropped a pair of contests at Davenport University (13-26 overall, 7-11 GLIAC) on Wednesday afternoon falling 9-1 in five innings and coming up just short in late rally 9-8 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on the first collegiate home run by junior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).

The host Panthers answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.  A walk and a single preceded a strikeout.  Lindsay Goodman reached on a fielder's choice as Warrior pitcher Sasha Buckberger's (Oakville, Ont.) throw to third was not in time loading the bases.  A walk to Kaycee Loehr knotted the game at 1-1, prior to a sacrifice fly by Brooke Cowan put DU ahead for good.  Emma Miller's two-out single produced the third run of the inning.

Junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) and freshman Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) both singled in the fourth but WSU was unable to push across any runs.

In the bottom of the inning, Davenport tallied six runs on eight hits.  Riley Hasseld had a two-run triple to make it 5-1, before three consecutive RBI hits increased the hosts advantage to 8-1.  DU's last run was unearned and came on a fielder's choice.

IN THE CIRCLE
Buckberger (5-11) surrendered eight runs in three-plus innings on eight hits and three walks.  She struck out three.  Freshman Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed an unearned run in her one inning of work.  Batton gave up three hits and struck out one.

Kelsey Byers (5-10) earned the victory limiting WSU to one run on four hits in five innings.  She struck out three and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
O'Donnell had two hits, while senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) walked twice.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Hasseld had three hits, drove in two and scored a pair of runs.  Gabby Palazzolo reached base three times via two hits and a walk, and scored twice.

GAME TWO RECAP
For the second straight contest, WSU took a 1-0 lead.  Miller led off the top of the first with a walk, moved to second on a single by senior Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.), and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Bonk.

DU evened the score in the bottom of the first on a two-out home run by Hayley Kreiger, her team-leading sixth of the season.

Wayne State went ahead 4-1 with a three-run third inning.  Hodder had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Peru.  After sophomore shortstop Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) drew a walk to load the bases, Bonk smashed her first home run of the season to left center.

The Panthers responded with a five run third inning to take a 6-4 lead.  Kreiger had a two-run single and Loehr hit a two-run home run.

The Warriors pulled within a run with a single tally in the top of the fifth.  Sophomore Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had a two-out single and scored when classmate Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) laced an RBI double to left center.

Davenport increased its lead to 9-5 with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Kreiger contributed an RBI single, while Lindsay Goodman had a two-run bloop single.

WSU tried to rally in the top of the seventh.  Bonk had a leadoff double and went to third on a single by Josephson.  Bonk scored when Josephson stole second and the throw was off the mark.  O'Donnell singled to put runners on the corners.  After a ground out, Miller delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to one (9-8).  Hodder walked, but a strikeout ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
