More Late-Game Heroics Push Wayne State Past Parkside

Mason McGuire (pictured) brought in the game-tying run with an RBI single in the eighth.

DETROIT -- Trailing Parkside (10-29 overall, 3-20 GLIAC) 7-6 entering the bottom of the eighth inning on a water-logged Friday, the 13th-ranked Wayne State University baseball team (31-9, 17-5 GLIAC) turned to Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton) and Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich. / Richmond). McGuire singled in Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) to tie it before Hitzelberger scored McGuire with a double to give his team the lead for good, 8-7.

Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich. / Yale) received a no decision after lasting 5.2 innings on 122 pitches and 28 batters faced. Korolden surrendered five runs, two earned, on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

First out of the bullpen, Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich. / Jonesville) improved to 3-1 with 2.1 frames, two unearned runs given up on two hits, one free pass, and two punchouts. Then, Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) picked up his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Offensively, McGuire (2-for-4, 3 R, 3 RBI) and Hitzelberger (2-for-2, 2 RBI), off the bench, paced the Wayne State offense. The team's three other hits came from CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS), Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) and Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford). Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), Maury and Van Sicklen also scored at least one run each while Hatzigeorgiou joined McGuire and Hitzelberger in the RBI department.

Next up on the schedule, the Warriors and Rangers will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
