DETROIT -- Paced by seven runs on 13 hits and a stellar pitching performance from
Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), the Wayne State University baseball team (34-9 overall, 20-5 GLIAC) wrapped up a four-game sweep of Parkside (10-32 overall, 3-23 GLIAC) on Sunday, 7-2. Next up, the Warriors will be at Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. first pitch against the Cardinals.
Wayne State reached 20 GLIAC wins in a season for the ninth time in program history and first time since 2017. The school record of 24 was set in 1999 and the Warriors are now also three victories away from tying the program record for overall wins in a season, which was set last year.
Kilander lasted eight innings on 109 pitches while facing 31 batters. The sophomore right-hander gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts (tied career high). In relief,
Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) faced just two batters in the ninth but recorded three outs on a double play and a ground out.
Offensively, 12 of Wayne State's 13 hits were singles with the extra-base hit being a three-run home run by
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) in the second, the first blast of his career. Maury was one of four Warriors to register multiple hits along with
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline),
Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and
Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort).
