Softball Splits Home Twinbill With Davenport

WSU wins game one in walk-off fashion.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (12-18 overall, 2-8 GLIAC) split a home doubleheader with visiting Davenport University (10-19 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field.  The Warriors scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 9-8.  The Panthers tallied six runs in the top of the seventh in the nightcap to post an 11-1 victory.

GAME ONE RECAP
Davenport scored an unearned run in the top of the first, then added four runs in the second for a 5-0 advantage.  The big blow was a two-out three-run triple by Gabby Palazzolo.

WSU roared back in the bottom of the fourth with six runs to take a 6-5 lead.  Junior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) started the rally with a single and senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) followed with a bunt single.  After a fly out, senior Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) singled to scoring Wayne State's first run.  Junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) singled through the right side and sophomore Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) doubled in a run to make it 5-3.  Sophomore Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) and freshman Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) had back-to-back RBI singles to knot the game at 5-5.  The Warriors took the lead on a sacrifice fly by freshman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

The lead lasted for one pitch as DU had a single followed by two-run home run from Hayley Kreiger on consecutive pitches for a 7-6 Panther lead.

Davenport extended its lead to 8-6 in the sixth on a single and three walks.

In the bottom of the seventh, Miller reached on a one-out error, and moved into scoring position on a ground out.  WSU then produced four consecutive two-out singles.  Sophomore Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) had an RBI single to center, Peru singled up the middle, and Bonk's dribbler down the third base line loaded the bases.  Ruczynski then laced the first pitch into left center field for a two-run walk-off single.  It was Ruczynski's second walk-off hit of the season (5-4 win over Saint Michael's in Florida).

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) started for WSU and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings.  She struck out six and walked four.  Classmate Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) earned the win in relief by holding the Panthers scoreless over her 1.2 innings of work.  Batton struck out two and walked two.

Kelsey Byers pitched the first 3.1 innings for DU and surrendered six earned runs on seven hits.  She struck out four and did not walk a batter.  Emma Miller suffered the loss allowing three unearned runs in 3.1 innings on four hits.  Miller struck out one and walked one.

Ruczynski had two hits and three RBI, while both Peru and Bonk had two hits apiece.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Palazzolo had two hits and three RBI, Riley Hasseld had three hits and two runs scored.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Miller had a leadoff double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hodder and scored on an RBI single by Wrubel.

Davenport scored five times in the third on three hits and three walks, plus a WSU error.  Brooke Bernt had a two-run single increasing the DU lead from 2-1 to 4-1.

Neither team scored in the next three innings, before the Panthers scored six times in the top of the seventh on six hits, including a two-run home run by Kreiger and a two-run double by Aaliyah Walker.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk gave up five runs (three earned) on three hits in 2.2 innings.  She walked five and did not record a strikeout.  Batton tossed 4.1 innings and surrendered six runs (five earned) on 10 hits.  She struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Miller pitched the first four innings for DU and allowed just one earned run on three hits.  She struck out two and walked one.  MaKayla Thompson hurled the final three innings and held the Warriors scoreless on one hit.  She struck out one and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wayne State had just six base runners in the game, with Wrubel recording a hit and the lone RBI.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Bernt had three hits and two RBI, while both Kreiger and Walker each had two hits and two RBI.
