DETROIT -- Head coach
Tim Koth and the Wayne State University volleyball program have announced the schedule for the upcoming 2023 season. The Warriors are set to play a total of 29 regular season matches, including 27 against Midwest Region opponents, 18 as part of GLIAC action and nine at home inside the Matthaei Center.
"The focus for the 2023 schedule was once again on competition within the Midwest Region," mentioned Koth. "I feel that navigating through matches against the best from our region, outside of the GLIAC, will give us the best opportunity to position ourselves for selection into the NCAA Tournament. As for the GLIAC slate of contests, I expect nothing but very strong competition every match we play as this league continues to be elite when it comes to the Division II level. We are looking forward to these challenges this fall."
The schedule gets underway on Sept. 1-2 in Big Rapids, Mich. with four matches in two days at the Ferris State Invitational. There, Wayne State will face Malone (G-MAC) and Thomas More (G-MAC) on day one before Indianapolis (GLVC) and Minnesota Duluth (NSIC) the following afternoon. Then, on Sept. 8-9, the Warriors will take to Ohio for the Findlay Invitational against the likes of IUP (PSAC), Hillsdale (G-MAC), Cedarville (G-MAC), and Findlay (G-MAC).
WSU will make both its 2023 home and GLIAC debuts on Sept. 14 by hosting Ferris State for a 7 p.m. first serve. That meeting will kick off an 18-match GLIAC schedule (six of last nine at home), interrupted only by three matches at the Midwest Regional Crossover (opponents TBA) on Oct. 13-14 at the Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, Ind.
Following the conclusion of the regular season on Nov. 11 against Davenport, the league's top four seeds will host a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal contest on Nov. 15 with the winners advancing to the weekend. The top remaining seed will host the two semifinal matchups and the title match on Nov. 18-19.
