Football Drops 28-7 Decision At 18th-Ranked Indianapolis

McLean leads WSU with 123 yards of total offense.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Wayne State University football squad (1-2 overall) played its second road game of the season against a top-20 ranked opponent and fell 28-7 at 18th-ranked Indianapolis (2-0 overall) Saturday evening at Key Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU began the contest with a three-and-out, while the Greyhounds drove 61 yards in 13 plays following the punt to take a 7-0 lead just past the mid-point of the opening stanza.  UIndy had four plays of at least 10 yards on its opening drive which concluded on a pass from Gavin Sukup to Jon Lewis near the goal line but Lewis recovered his own fumble in the end zone.

Both teams punted on their second possession of the game.

After an Indianapolis punt was downed at the WSU three-yard line late in the first period, the Warriors garnered their first two first downs of the game.

Second Quarter
The aforementioned Wayne State drive ended with a punt.  The Greyhounds drove to the WSU 20-yard line but a fourth down pass was broken up by graduate student safety Drake Reid (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester).

The Warriors crossed over the midfield stripe thanks to back-to-back 15-yard penalties on UIndy (Roughing the Kicker/Punter and Pass Interference).  The drive stalled and WSU punted.

The Greyounds used 10 plays to cover 81 yards with Sukup scoring on a 16-yard keeper on third-and-five in the final minute of the half extending the hosts advantage to 14-0.

Indianapolis had a 217-53 edge in total offense through the first 30 minutes, including a 130-53 margin in rushing yards as WSU did not complete a pass (on three attempts) in the first half.

Third Quarter
On the ninth play of the Indianapolis drive to start the second half, Colin Seymour missed a 37-yard field goal attempt.

WSU garnered one first down on the ensuing possession but then had to punt.

The Greyhounds used over five minutes of clock time and went 85 yards in nine plays with Sukup scoring on a six-yard keeper increasing the UIndy lead to 21-0.

Fourth Quarter
Wayne State began a drive late in the third quarter and moved the chains once but then had to punt.

The Warrior defense stepped up and forced a three-and-out, but the WSU offense earned one first down before punting.

Indianapolis had a 28-yard pass play on the first play after the punt, but the next series was a three-and-out.

After the UIndy punt was downed at the Warrior five-yard line, graduate student quarterback Eli McLean (Clarkston, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) began the drive with a 25-yard keeper and concluded the scoring drive with a 13-yard jaunt around the right end.  WSU went 95 yards in eight plays in 3:47 to pull within 21-7.

The Greyhounds answered with a four play, 75-yard touchdown drive in just 27 seconds after the touchback concluding with a 49-yard scamper by Lewis.

Following a three-and-out by Wayne State, Indianapolis ran out the clock.
