Warriors Wrap Up Play at Ferris State Invite; Giroux and Dulgar Named to All-Tournament Team

The Warriors will be in Ohio next week for the Findlay Classic.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team finished its stay in Big Rapids on Saturday as part of the Ferris State Invitational.  The Warriors dropped a pair of outings against the likes of Indianapolis in four sets and No. 8 Minnesota Duluth in three.

"Despite today's losses, there really was some significant growth from our team today.  We learned quite a bit about ourselves and what we need to work on to continue this team's progression."

MATCH ONE vs. INDIANAPOLIS (L, 1-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wayne State's best offensive performance of all four matches came in this second set.
- That period, the Warriors hit .478 with 13 kills and just two errors on 23 total attacks.
- Indianapolis book ended the match with hitting clips of .393 in the first and .381 in the fourth.
- The Greyhounds finished with five service aces to one from the Warriors.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) was on top of the kill department with 14 (.591 hitting percentage).
- Katie Smith (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) and Molly Miller (Oxford, Mich.) notched 13 kills and 10 kills, respectively.
- Smith also finished with her second double-double of the week as she added 10 digs.
- Kayla Dulgar (Warsaw, Ohio / River View) dished out 36 assists and solo blocked three attack attempts.
- Also on defense, Kendyl Andrews (Flushing, Mich.) was responsible for 20 digs.

ONE BIG THING
- Adding on to the Warriors' second-set success, the Greyounds answered with a clip of just -.115.

MATCH TWO vs. #8-MINNESOTA DULUTH (L, 0-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED (20-25, 16-25, 15-25)
- Neither team scored more than two points in a row to begin the set until Wayne State ran off four straight to go ahead by two, 9-7.
- The Warriors would then lead by two on two more occasions, including 10-8 and 11-9, before the Bulldogs used five-straight points and led by three, 14-11.
- WSU responded with three in a row of its own to tie the set for a final time at 14-14, but was outscored 11-6 from there on out.
- Aside from four deadlocks in the second period, UMD held the advantage for all of the second and third sets.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Giroux and Miller paced the attack with eight kills each on hitting percentages of .333 and .222, respectively.
- Also on the offense, Dulgar finished with 27 assists and was one of three players (Andrews, Meah Potter (Holt, Mich. / Homeschooled)) who sent home one ace apiece.

ONE BIG THING
- Minnesota Duluth outhit Wayne State .342 to .167, including .368 to .125 in the third set.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
-Giroux (39 kills, .479 hitting percentage) and Dulgar (9.64 assists per set, one double-double) represented Wayne State on the All-Tournament Team.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will travel to Ohio for the Findlay Classic on Friday and Saturday for four more matches in a two-day span.
