Football Defeats Missouri S&T In Wheatley's Home Debut 31-24

WSU never trailed in the contest.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football squad evened its 2023 record at 1-1 with a 31-24 victory over visiting Missouri S&T (0-2 overall) Saturday afternoon at Tom Adams Field, in the home debut of first-year head coach Tyrone Wheatley.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors took the opening kickoff and drove 61 yards in 10 plays culminating in a 31-yard field goal by junior Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.).  With the three points Milovanski became the seventh place-kicker in school history (105th season) with 100 career points.  Big plays on the drive were a 22-yard run by senior Kendall Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) and a six-yard rush by sophomore D'Marco Singleton (Marysville, Mich.) on a third-and-three.

After the Miners garnered one first down, a 57-yard punt went for a touchback.  WSU went three-and-out before an S&T drive carried over in the second stanza.

Second Quarter
The early part of the period saw three consecutive punts (two by S&T, and one by WSU).  Wayne State extended its lead to 10-0 with a five-play, 81-yard scoring drive.  On third-and-six in the initial series, junior Te'Avion Warren (Flint, Mich. / Davison) hauled in a 37-yard reception from graduate student Eli McLean (Clarkston, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep).  Two plays later McLean found junior tight end Kaveon Ross (Columbus, Ohio / Walnut Ridge) open down the middle for a 32-yard touchdown strike.  It was Ross' second career reception and first touchdown, and McLean's first career touchdown pass.

The Miners answered with a 11-play, 44-yard drive concluding with a 43-yard field goal from Layne Ryals making it 10-3 with 2:48 left in the half.

Less than a minute later, WSU increased its margin to 17-3 with a two-play, 71-yard scoring drive as Singleton scored on a 58-yard scamper around the right end and down the sideline.  It was Singleton's first career touchdown.

The points kept coming as Missouri S&T drove 75 yards in 10 plays in just 1:44 to pull within 17-10 with 13 seconds left before intermission.  MST signal caller Tony Gioia completed a four-yard scoring toss to Justis Braden after converting back-to-back third-and-one situations earlier on the drive.

Wayne State out-rushed Missouri S&T 141-64 in the first half, and led 210-154 in total offense.

Third Quarter
Each team punted on its initial possession after halftime, before S&T went 61yards in six plays to knot the score at 17-17.  CJ Jarmon hauled in a two-yard scoring pass from Gioia with 6:27 remaining in the stanza.

WSU answered with a 12-play, 50-yard touchdown drive that culminated in a two-yard keeper by graduate student Jayden Waddell (Union Mills, N.C. / East Rutherford).  Two penalties on the Miners helped extend the drive - an offside on third-and-10, and a personal foul on a missed field goal attempt.

Fourth Quarter
Three plays after the go-ahead touchdown, Gioia completed a pass over the middle to Blaize Klossner, but a hard hit by the Warrior secondary forced a fumble which was recovered by Wayne State.

On the first play after the turnover, Waddell found Warren behind the MST secondary for a 57-yards touchdown pass.  It was Warren's first career touchdown.

An MST punt and a turnover on downs were sandwiched around a missed field goal by Milovanski.  Following a 56-yard punt by junior Jeremy Taras (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II), the Miners cut the WSU advantage to seven (31-24) with a five-play, 83-yard touchdown drive as CJ Wiggins had a 49-yard TD reception with 1:38 left in the fourth period.

The onside kick did not go 10 yards, and Wayne State ran out the clock thanks to a 31-yard run by sophomore Manny Harris (Kankakee, Ill. / Bishop McNamara) on a third-and-12.
