Men's Basketball Upended 67-60 At Davenport

Aburashed led the Warriors with 13 points.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (7-7 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) fell 67-60 at Davenport University (5-8 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Sophomore center Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) scored on the game's first possession off a feed from classmate Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher).  Sophomore Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle [Macomb CC]) made a lay-up off a dish from senior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) for a 4-0 lead.  After a DU bucket by Jaden Terrell, a Coffey hook shot made is 6-2.

The Panthers scored four consecutive points, before a step back jumper by Harris.  Senior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman HS) gave the guests a 10-6 advantage with a lay-up.  Davenport's Myles Belyeu scored the next four points which ignited a 7-0 DU run for a 13-10 lead by the hosts.

Junior Colin Golson, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Ferndale [Siena/Eastern Michigan]) scored off a feed from Adley and freshman Jordan Briggs (Muskegon, Mich.) made a pull-up jumper helping WSU regain the lead at 14-13.

Panther Marcedus Leech, Jr. tallied five of the game's next six points for a 18-15 advantage by DU.  Wayne State responded with a 11-2 run which included five points from Williams, Jr., four from sophomore Kareem Aburashed (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day [Macomb CC]) and two by Golson, Jr. for a 26-20 lead.

A dunk by Aburashed ended a 4-0 spurt for the Panthers.  WSU ended the first half on a 5-1 run to lead 33-25 at intermission.

Second Half
Following a Davenport bucket, Williams, Jr. connected from beyond the arc for WSU's first triple of the game to push the lead to nine (36-27).

The Panthers tallied seven of the next nine points before Golson, Jr. split a pair from the charity stripe, and Adley made a jump shot.

DU then scored the next 10 points for a 44-41 advantage for the hosts.

Back-to-back triples by Aburashed knotted the score at 48-48 with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Consecutive lay-ups by Golson, Jr. and Briggs put the visitors in front 53-51 with 8:10 left.

Wayne State scored five of the next nine points to lead 58-55 at the 5:47 mark.

Neither team scored for nearly 3:30 until Leech, Jr. made a pair of foul shots to cut the WSU lead to one (58-57) with 2:19 remaining.

A Briggs jumper extended the Warrior lead to three (60-57) with 1:48 left, but Davenport would score the game's final 10 points as Wayne State went scoreless for the final 100 seconds.

WSU was out-scored 42-27 over the final 20 minutes.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 43 percent (24-of-56) from the field, compared to DU's 47 percent (25-of-53).  WSU was just 3-of-20 (15 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Panthers were 4-of-17 (24 percent).  The Warriors made 9-of-17 foul shots (53 percent) with Davenport shooting 65 percent (13-of-20) from the charity stripe.  WSU was out-rebounded 36-33, and had 11 turnovers to 12 miscues by DU.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Aburashed scored a season-best 13 points, which included two of WSU's three triples.  Golson, Jr. and Williams, Jr. contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively while also tying for team-high rebounding honors with six boards each.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Belyeu scored a game-high 16 points with Leech, Jr. chipping in with 13 points, and Terrell adding 10 points.  James Felton nearly had a double-double with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will return to the west side of Michigan on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tip-off at Grand Valley State (the original start time was pushed back two hours due to the impending weather).
