Men's Basketball Outlasted by No. 13 Ferris State 79-75

The Warriors cut a 17-point deficit down to three, but no closer.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (8-9 overall, 2-6 GLIAC) trailed 13th-ranked Ferris State (16-3 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) by as many as 17 points on Thursday night inside the Fieldhouse.  The Warriors battled all the way back to within three on five different occasions before falling by a final score of 79-75.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Ferris State led the game wire-to-wire and opened by scoring the first six points before Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) put Wayne State on the board with a lay-up.

The Warriors pulled within one point of the Bulldogs at 6-5 thanks to a Coffey free throw before the Bulldogs began to assert themselves.  With that being said, the visitors weren't able to extend their lead to more than five until the 11:49 mark at 19-12 as part of a 9-4 run.

The home team clawed back to within five in three different instances, the final being 24-19 following a jumper from Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle [Macomb CC]) inside the paint.  FSU countered with 11 of the next 14 points to gain its largest advantage of the first half at 13, 35-22.

From there until the final buzzer of the stanza, WSU couldn't get any closer than 10 with the scoreboard reading 39-29 heading into the intermission.

Second Half
Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) opened the scoring in the second half with a triple to make it a seven-point game, 39-32.

Ferris State proceeded to outscore Wayne State 18-8 over the next six minutes and change to stretch the margin to its largest of the night at 17, 57-40.

The Warriors turned it on, though, and rattled off 21 points to the guest's seven in a nearly-eight minute stretch that shrank the edge down to three for the first of those occurrences, 64-61.  In that 8:43 span, seven different players found the scoring column for the Warriors (6-of-14 FG, 7-of-8 FT) paced by nine from Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher).

However, the Bulldogs always had an answer and totaled 15 points to the host's 14 in the final four-plus minutes.

TEAM STATS
In a physical game that saw a combined 40 personal fouls (20 each way), Ferris State shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field to Wayne State's 39.3 percent (24-of-61).  The Warriors held a severe advantage in both bench scoring (29-11) and fast-break points (16-5).  WSU converted just four of its 24 three-point attempts (16.7 percent) while FSU went 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from behind the arc.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Four Warriors scored in double figures including Adley (15), Williams (14), Lee (14, tied personal best) and Coffey (10).  Also on offense, Adley dished out eight of Wayne State's 13 assists, a new career high for the sophomore.  Lee tied the game high in rebounds with eight, the most by the freshman this season.  Defensively, Colin Golson, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Ferndale [Siena / Eastern Michigan]) stuffed a personal-best three shot attempts, while both Adley and Williams notched a pair of steals.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Ben Davidson and Dolapo Olayinka both finished with 20 points while DeSean Munson added 18 and Jack Ammerman chipped in 10.  Olayinka came two rebounds shy of a double-double, Munson tallied four assists and so did Ammerman.  On the other side of the ball, Olayinka blocked a pair of shots and Munson contributed a trio of steals.
