Women's Basketball Suffers 95-59 Setback Against Parkside

Three Warriors scored in double figures for the contest.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (9-4 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) fell 95-59 to visiting Parkside (7-4 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Parkside shot 78 percent (14-of-18) from the floor in scoring 33 first quarter points.  The Rangers led 33-16 after 10 minutes.  A lay-up from Chloe Van Zeeland with six minutes remaining put UWP ahead by nine (13-4), before the Rangers grabbed their first double-digit advantage of the contest on Grace Lomen's jumper with 3:13 to play.  The guests had runs of 7-0, 9-0, and 6-0 within their 33-point effort.

Second Quarter
The second 10-minute span was the only quarter in which WSU out-paced Parkside in scoring, doing so 24-20.  Following a Gabriela Loiz triple that put UWP ahead by 21 (40-19), the Warriors tallied the game's next seven points between the 6:22 and 5:23 marks of the period.  That closed the squad's deficit to 14 (40-26), but the Rangers and the Green and Gold would play to a near even score in the final 5:23, with WSU out-scoring UWP by just one (14-13) in the span before intermission.

Freshman guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) was a bright spot for Wayne State in the opening 20 minutes.  She scored 12 points, including seven on free throws.

Third Quarter
Parkside held the Warriors to just three points in the first 5:13 of the second half.  The Rangers notched 15 in that same stretch, culminating with a three-pointer from Sheridan Flauger that put UWP ahead by 25 (68-43) and forced Wayne State to call a timeout.  The guests would have that same 25-point edge (77-50) by the end of the third stanza.  WSU had 10 points in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
A lay-up from Van Zeeland gave the Rangers their first 30-point lead of the night (84-54), and UWP coasted to a 36-point triumph by out-pacing Wayne State 18-9 in the concluding 10 minutes.  Several reserves saw playing time near the end for WSU.  Junior forward Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) sank a pair of free throws and nabbed three rebounds, while sophomore forward Thaya Luse (Elburn, Ill. / Example Academy) made a foul shot and grabbed an offensive board.

TEAM STATS
Parkside shot 53 percent (38-of-71) from the field, which was better than Wayne State's 33 percent (18-of-55).  UWP nailed seven of its 23 triple tries (30 percent), while WSU knocked down four of their 19 three-pointers (21 percent).  Both teams shot plenty of free throws for the game.  The Rangers made 12-of-17 (71 percent), which was percentage points ahead of the Warriors' 19-of-27 (70 percent).  The visitors out-rebounded the hosts 44-29, and used 24 WSU turnovers to score 35 points (WSU had 14 points off 20 Parkside turnovers).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Ferguson led the squad with 15 points.  She knocked down seven of her 10 free throw attempts and also nailed a pair of triples.  Sophomore forward Gabi Lutchka's (Grass Lake, Mich.) 12 points and junior forward Shea Tripp's (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) 11 joined Ferguson in double figures.  Tripp also had a team-best six rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Lomen and Flauger tied for the game-best with 18 points.  Flauger hit four three-pointers to lead all scorers.  Loiz had 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Kendal Zeiter scored an even 10 on 5-of-6.  Lillie Petersen hauled in a game-best seven boards, and Paty Gallasova dished out a game-high seven assists.
