GLIAC -- Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) of the Wayne State University volleyball team was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for the third time in her already illustrious career and first time this season. Giroux has now been honored by the league four times since becoming a Warrior, including three offensive nods and one defensive.
Last week, Giroux registered a .585 hitting percentage in a pair of Warrior victories over Michigan Tech on Friday and Northern Michigan on Saturday, both of which were sweeps. The junior racked up 31 kills without a single attack error on 53 total attempts while playing without an attack error in back-to-back showings for just the second time in her career and first time since her freshman campaign.
Those two efforts raised Giroux's hitting percentage for the season to .436, which is good for first in the conference (by over four percent) and fourth in all of Division II. Nationally, the Flat Rock product also ranks 34th in points per set (4.44) and 41st in blocks per set (1.18). For her career, she's hitting .368, which would be the top mark in program history.
Winners in four of their last six matches, Giroux and her teammates will be at No. 2 Ferris State (22-0 overall, 11-0 GLIAC) on Friday night for a 6 p.m. first serve against the Bulldogs.
